A Cornish Christmas Carol is a festive delight to enjoy with a hot cup of mulled wine, perfect for fans of Jenny Colgan and Karen Swan. Joy to the world? Not if Abigail Scorrier has anything to do with it. She's spent most of her adult life trying to avoid the festive frenzy. She loved Christmas as a child in Cornwall: the colourful stockings hanging above a crackling fire, the excitement of what will be waiting for her the next morning. But ever since her life took a heart-breaking turn, she's buried those memories and done everything she can to avoid her past, her family and most of all, the Christmas season. But on Christmas Eve, Abigail will have three visitors she can't ignore, and what they reveal about her past, present and future might just change her life - and mend her heart... "'Mr Scrooge,' said the gentleman. 'I have come to ask for your help because it is Christmas. I want money to help the poor people who have no money and no homes.' 'Aren't there any prisons?' asked Scrooge. 'Aren't there any workhouses? Put these people in prisons and workhouses.' 'But prisons and workhouses are very unpleasant places. I am sure you want people to have a merry Christmas,' replied the gentleman. 'I don't have a merry Christmas,' said Scrooge. 'Christmas is nonsense. It's humbug! I don't believe in Christmas. I'm not giving money to anyone else so they can have a merry Christmas.' " --back cover.

Peter Warlock is one of the several pseudonyms adopted by the critic, researcher, editor and composer, Philip Heseltine (1894-1930). Previous studies of Warlock have been almost exclusively biographical, using the pseudonyms as evidence of a split personality and applying this and other controversial aspects of his colourful life-style to an evaluation of his music.Brian Collins' refreshing new analysis of Warlock's output shows such approaches as often misleading. Focusing on key elements of Warlock's compositional techniques, such as his preoccupation with chordal material, Collins demonstrates that the early songs, often tonally adventurous and heavily influenced by Delius and van Dieren, are natural precursors to the more familiar later style. This later style is more suited to the contemplative and philosophical songs that make up the majority of his output.Nevertheless, Warlock has been criticized for writing 'all those songs about beer'; in analysing his choice of subject matter and the respect he accorded to the natural stresses of the texts he used, this book offers more penetrating insights into the composer's motivations and achievements. As such it is vital reading for those concerned with the evolution of British music in the early part of this century.

This will be one Christmas they'll never forget. Piran Ambrose is the epitome of brooding male. But Pendruggan's Mr Rochester is in danger of becoming its Ebeneezer Scrooge when he is driven to distraction by the villager's over-the-top Christmas celebrations. How could the cringeworthy amateur village production of Aladdin bring seasonal cheer to anyone, he wonders? And do the village children really have to arrive at his cottage door every single night in December with their terrible recorders and discordant singing? But when Piran's bad temper risks spoiling Christmas for everyone, something drastic needs to be done. So, over one Christmas Eve, three very special people pay Piran a visit, determined to show him what Christmas is really all about.
