This powerful middle-grade novel from the Newbery Honor author of RULES explores a friendship between a small-town girl and the daughter of migrant workers. When Lily's blind dog, Lucky, slips his collar and runs away across the wide-open blueberry barrens of eastern Maine, it's Salma Santiago who manages to catch him. Salma, the daughter of migrant workers, is in the small town with her family for the blueberry-picking season. After their initial chance meeting, Salma and Lily bond over painting bee boxes for Lily's grandfather, and Salma's friendship transforms Lily's summer. But when Salma decides to run in the upcoming Blueberry Queen pageant, they'll have to face some tough truths about friendship and belonging. Should an outsider like Salma really participate in the pageant-and possibly win? Set amongst the blueberry barrens and by the sea, this is a gorgeous new novel by Newbery Honor author Cynthia Lord that tackles themes of prejudice and friendship, loss and love. Praise for A Handful of Stars: *"Salma's artistic creativity and gumption awaken Lily to the power of imagination, the importance of embracing change and knowing when to let go of the past, and the rewards of venturing beyond one's comfort zone." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review *"The treatment of Salma's migrant life is matter-of-fact but direct, and Lily plausibly deals with possibilities of local racism and swells with indignation on behalf of her new friend... It's the straightforward and unaffected prose (highly suitable for a readaloud as well as reading alone) that really allows Lily's story to shine... it's hard to resist joining her on her journey toward greater maturity." -- Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, starred review Praise for Half A Chance: *"[Lord] has combined vivid, cinematic description with deft characterization and handles several important issues with sensitivity, nuance, and great skill... A deeply enjoyable read." -- School Library Journal, starred review *"With winning results, Lord brings the same sensitivity to the subject of dementia that she brought to autism in her Newbery Honor book, Rules." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred reviews Praise for Rules: Newbery Honor Book Schneider Family Book Award

Melodious and elegant style, yet easy to read. Short chapters, each one dedicated to how one particular Biblical text impacted the life of both real-life and fictional characters; the latter probably reveal the impact the text had on the corresponding real-life author. A great book to have handy on a rainy day or during sleepless hours; it warms the heart and the spirit. Reverend Frank William Boreham (1871-1959) was a Baptist preacher best known in New Zealand, Australia, and England. He became a Baptist preacher after conversion to Christianity while working in London. He was probably the last student interviewed by Charles Spurgeon for entry into his Pastor's College. After graduation, Boreham accepted a ministry at Mosgiel church, Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1895 and there began his prolific writings initially for the local newspaper. He later was a pastor in Hobart, Tasmania, and then on mainland Australia in Melbourne at Armadale and Kew. He wrote some 3,000 editorials that appeared in the Hobart Mercury every week for 47 years between 1912-1959, and others in the Melbourne Age. His works include: Mushrooms on the Moor (1915), Faces in the Fire and Other Fancies (1916), The Other Side of the Hill (1917), The Silver Shadow (1918), The Uttermost Star (1919), A Bunch of Everlastings (1920), The Home of the Echoes (1921) and A Handful of Stars: Texts That Have Moved Great Minds (1922).

An enthralling northeastern saga of the 1930s. It's a tale of passion, poverty and survival as the Depression brings Tyneside to its knees. Eighteen-year-old Clara Magee is devastated when her father commits suicide, leaving his family with nothing but gambling debts. Facing ruin, the Magees are forced to sell their business, a fancy-goods shop, to a German couple whom Patience resents. Despite her mother's disapproval, Clara befriends their daughter Reenie and hot-headed son Benny. Patience thinks old family friend Vinnie Craven would make far better company for her daughter, and Vinnie's admiration of Clara is obvious to all. Yet her heart lies elsewhere - with Reenie and Benny's dashing elder brother Frank. When Frank leaves abruptly for Germany, a disappointed Clara tries to dismiss her feelings for him and eventually agrees to marry Vinnie. Clara hadn't bargained for Vinnie's violent temper, however, and his growing fascination with Mosley's Fascist party is disturbing. But the greatest shock is still to come...

A cult classic, from an era populated by the most colourful tennis players of all time, A Handful of Summers is an uninhibited account of adventures on the tennis circuits of the world. More about the hilarious escapades of players than the game itself, the book begins with a short series of vignettes from Forbes' childhood on a Cape farm, then takes the reader on a tennis tour - into locker rooms and restaurants, narrow streets and small hotels, and onwards to the lawns of Wimbledon and the caramel coloured clays of Roland Garros.
