A beautiful and inspiring tale of conflict and survival that will inspire young readers and adults alike. In 1985 southern Sudan is ravaged by war. Rebels and government forces battle for control, with ordinary people, like eleven-year-old Salva, caught in the middle. When Salva's village is attacked, he becomes one of the 'lost boys' of Sudan, traveling the African continent on foot in search of his family and a new life. Years later, a girl named Nya walks eight hours a day to fetch water for her family. The walk is gruelling, but there is unexpected hope, as Salva’s story goes on to intersect with Nya’s in an astonishing and moving way.

Reading the World’s Stories is volume 5 in the Bridges to Understanding series of annotated international youth literature bibliographies sponsored by the United States Board on Books for Young People. USBBY is the United States chapter of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), a Switzerland-based nonprofit whose mission is bring books and children together. The series promotes sharing international children’s books as a way to facilitate intercultural understanding and meet new literary voices. This volume follows Children’s Books from Other Countries (1998), The World though Children’s Books (2002), Crossing Boundaries with Children’s Books (2006), and Bridges to Understanding: Envisioning the World through Children’s Books (2011) and acts as a companion book to the earlier titles. Centered around the theme of the importance of stories, the guide is a resource for discovering more recent global books that fit many reading tastes and educational needs for readers aged 0-18 years. Essays by storyteller Anne Pellowski, author Beverley Naidoo, and academic Marianne Martens offer a variety of perspectives on international youth literature. This latest installment in the series covers books published from 2010-2014 and includes English-language imports as well as translations of children’s and young adult literature first published outside of the United States. These books are supplemented by a smaller number of culturally appropriate books from the US to help fill in gaps from underrepresented countries. The organization of the guide is geographic by region and country. All of the more than 800 entries are recommended, and many of the books have won awards or achieved other recognition in their home countries. Forty children’s book experts wrote the annotations. The entries are indexed by author, translator, illustrator, title, and subject. Back matter also includes international book awards, important organizations and research collections, and a selected directory of publishers known for publishing books from other countries.

The New York Times «Μια απίστευτη σάτιρα για τη φυλετική ταυτότητα στην Αμερική... Los Angeles Times

Benedictus is a love story of both divine and human dimensions. The story of the nun is also the story of Joseph, her psychologist. It was a labyrinthian path that brought the two together in a surprising and courageous love that changed both their lives. Twenty years of conflict over her vocation had taken Sister Anne into a void whose depths of darkness became what she called a place of Nothing. She always believed that someone would come to help her and someone did but not as she had imagined and not in a way that the world would easily accept. It would take someone like Joseph, who was willing to risk all things professionally and personally, to pull her out of that void. Sister Annes risk was no less; she had to hold on and meet him every step of the way. No door would be left unopened, sparing her nothing. She walked through them all, and when the last door closed behind her, Sister Anne knew a choice had to be made.

Born of War is . . . based on a true story of lifelong friendship between American GIs and their new Chinese friends who live in Kunming, near the 14th Army Air Corps base, aka The Flying Tigers. Born of War is . . . a love story: a Jewish-American boy from Brooklyn leaves the woman he loves to go off to war. Frances insists he lacks the social conscience to be the kind of man she would marry. Just when he has given up hope, Henry finds support in the last place he expects. Born of War is . . . a socio-political commentary. Despite the Army’s stern warnings to the contrary, Henry and Jake find themselves involved in internal Chinese politics and, ultimately, at Mao Zedong’s dinner table. The friendship that springs up between Henry, his friend Jake Singer, and Neil Ku Nuli, Mr. and Mrs. Ai, Chong Lingxiu and others changes all their lives, and ultimately, joyfully reunites them all 30 years later. Written from many hours of taped interviews with veterans and Chinese citizens, the main plotline of Born of War is based on actual events. In 1999, Born of War was serialized in Points East, the publication of the Sino-Judaic Institute.
