Solis Betancourt believes that the soul and spirit of great interiors begins with fine works of art. The skillful integration of paintings, sculpture, period furniture, and decorative objects is a hallmark of the firm's rooms, which have been widely published in Architectural Digest, Southern Accents, and other prestigious design magazines. Essential Elegance will focus on fourteen recent projects in Washington, Virginia, New York, the Hamptons, Panama, and Puerto Rico, each incorporating works of art from a different period or style. Each project will be introduced with a vignette that focuses on the artwork that served as the design inspiration for the interiors. These range from Old Master drawings to African and Pre-Columbian sculpture to bold contemporary paintings. Ultimately all Solis Betancourt designs are based on classical traditions reinterpreted to suit a contemporary lifestyle and imbued with comfort and harmony.

Campion Platt, who grew up in Switzerland, founded his New York-based firm in 1990. He became widely known as a pioneer of boutique hotel design, and his studio now engages in a range of projects--apartments and houses, as well as furniture, lighting, textiles, and more. Platt's style combines a clean and simple, modern design vision with an embrace of color, beautifully crafted millwork, and a comprehensive approach that includes architecture, interior design and furniture-making. Above all, Platt's work is bespoke: every project, at multiple levels, is made to order. While presenting a broadly representative range of projects, Platt's first monograph also uses brief personal essays and lively descriptions, combined with original drawings from the designer's portfolio, to give readers a privileged inside view of how a world-class designer weaves his spell--in addition to providing tips and ideas to help people practice the "Platt approach" on their own. Included in this volume are an 1857 sea captain's house; a show house in Harlem, New York, where hip-hop rapper Jay-Z filmed a music video; a loft in Astor Place; a retreat for novelist Jay McInerney; and numerous lofts, apartments, and houses in America and abroad.

Radical. Visionary. Poetic. Inside Utopia shows the future of living that architects and designers have envisioned. Spectacular and reflective, unpretentious and efficient: the breathtaking Elrod House by John Lautner; the Lagerfeld Apartment near Cannes that seems like a set from a science fiction film; Palais Bulles in France with its organic and unique architecture. These interiors welcome habitation and spark curiosity while embodying the foundations of minimalism and bygone visions of the future. Inside Utopia delves into the rhyme and reason behind past designs that we still interact with today. The architects, the owners, and the craftsmen like Gio Ponti or Bruce Goff who work behind the scenes created amorphous interiors that invite the mind to wander. At the time they were futuristic, confident, utopian, idealistic-- we may not realize it, but they have shaped our current living concepts, and even now, they inspire us anew. Previously it has been difficult to attain access to these preserved interiors, but Inside Utopia unearths what was before unseen.

Dixonary is the first comprehensive book on one of Britains best known and most highly regarded product designers, in his own words and with a wealth of illustrations showing the inspiration behind each work he has produced in almost 30 years of design. Self-taught and a child of the punk era, Dixon (born 1959) founded his own studio in 1991 and became Head of Design at Habitat in 1998 before reestablishing his own brand, Tom Dixon a lighting and furniture design and manufacturing company in 2002. He has also been Creative Director at Artek, the Finnish furniture company founded by Alvar and Aino Aalto. Dixons artistic career began when he discovered the pleasures of welding while repairing damaged motorcycle frames; he went on to specialize in welded salvage furniture and became known as a designer when his S-Chair was manufactured by Guido Cappellini in 1991. Dixons previous books include Rethink (2002), an analysis of each room in the modern home, and The Interior World of Tom Dixon (2008), a book of ideas and observations on design, materials and style. 'Upgrade' breathes new life into forgotten architecture. Past structures are consciously preserved and revamped, expanded and altered, to create something exciting and enticing. 'Upgrade' explores architectural and design concepts that seek to enhance and repurpose our surroundings from slight changes to complete renovations. Extensions upon a rooftop. Factories turned into relaxing retreats. Wood additions contrasting with antique brick exteriors. Through engaging anecdotes and inspiriting images, 'Upgrade' provides vibrant exemplars and enthusiasm for revamping existing spaces. Repurposing the unused: be it an empty chapel that becomes an inviting writer?s nook or a rotten barn converted into a cozy living space for a small family. The projects illustrate the possibility of adding a touch of the new to the old: farmhouses adorned with modern glass additions or churches whose traditional lines now frame an office. What are ruins to some become another's architectural playground.
