When Mao and the Chinese Communist Party won power in 1949, they were determined to create new, revolutionary human beings. Their most precise instrument of ideological transformation was a massive program of linguistic engineering. They taught everyone a new political vocabulary, gave old words new meanings, converted traditional terms to revolutionary purposes, suppressed words that expressed incorrect thought, and required the whole population to recite slogans, stock phrases, and scripts that gave correct linguistic form to correct thought. They assumed that constant repetition would cause the revolutionary formulae to penetrate people's minds, engendering revolutionary beliefs and values. In an introductory chapter, Dr. Ji assesses the potential of linguistic engineering by examining research on the relationship between language and thought. In subsequent chapters, she traces the origins of linguistic engineering in China, describes its development during the early years of communist rule, then explores in detail the unprecedented manipulation of language during the Cultural Revolution of 1966 1976. Along the way, she analyzes the forms of linguistic engineering associated with land reform, class struggle, personal relationships, the Great Leap Forward, Mao-worship, Red Guard activism, revolutionary violence, Public Criticism Meetings, the model revolutionary operas, and foreign language teaching. She also reinterprets Mao s strategy during the early stages of the Cultural Revolution, showing how he manipulated exegetical principles and contexts of judgment to frame his alleged opponents. The work concludes with an assessment of the successes and failures of linguistic engineering and an account of how the Chinese Communist Party relaxed its control of language after Mao's death. "

Come back to Seattle's Blossom Street with #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber! These are the next four stories (after The Shop on Blossom Street, A Good Yarn and Susannah's Garden) in one of the most popular series around… Christmas Letters: Katherine O'Connor (known as K.O.) adores her five–year–old twin nieces–and strongly objects to her sister Zelda's plans to dispense with Christmas. Zelda is following the theories of child psychologist Wynn Jeffries, author of The Free Child (and also K.O.'s neighbor on Blossom Street). K.O. is particularly horrified by his edict to "bury Santa under the sleigh," and she's out to prove that Wynn and his ideas are full of…snow. He's not going to ruin her nieces' Christmas! Too bad the guy's so darned attractive… Back on Blossom Street: Susannah Nelson, owner of Susannah's Garden, has just hired an assistant named Colette Blake, a young widow who's obviously hiding a secret–or two! When Susannah and Colette both join Lydia Goetz's new knitting class, they discover that Lydia and her sister, Margaret, have worries of their own. Margaret's daughter, Julia, is the victim of a random carjacking, and the entire family is thrown into emotional chaos. Then there's Alix Townsend, whose wedding is only months away. She's not sure she can go through with it, though. But, like everyone in Lydia's knitting class, Alix knows there's a solution to every problem…and another woman can usually help you find it! Twenty Wishes: What Anne Marie Roche, owner of Blossom Street Books, wants is to find happiness again. At thirty–eight, she's childless, a recent widow and alone. On Valentine's Day, Anne Marie and several other widows get together to celebrate…a sense of hope. They each begin a list of twenty wishes–including things they'd always wanted to do but never done. When she volunteers at a local school, an eight–year–old girl named Ellen enters her life. As Ellen helps Anne Marie complete her list, they both learn that wishes can come true…but not necessarily in the way you expect! The Twenty–First Wish: Anne Marie and her adopted daughter, Ellen, have each written a list of twenty wishes–on which they included learning to knit. Like many of their wishes, it's come true and now they knit practically every day. But Ellen has quietly added a twenty–first wish: that her mom will fall in love with Ellen's birth father, Tim, who's recently entered their lives…

Twelve years have passed since Angie Robinson fled her hometown of Groves Point, South Carolina, with ten thousand dollars and a broken heart. She knows Simon Canfield still lives there. His powerful family practically owns the town. Now she’s back, if only to return the money Simon’s mother paid her to leave. For too long Angie has lived with her regrets, her mistakes, and her suffering. If there’s forgiveness to be had, the time has come. Years of anger and bitterness have hardened Simon’s resolve, and he doesn’t want any part of Angie—or her excuses. But when he discovers the truth about what happened and why she skipped out on him, everything changes. Simon lost the woman he loves once. Despite all that’s happened since, and all that still stand between them, he’s not about to lose her again.
