A real-world guide to Attachment Parenting from the Big Bang Theory actress, neuroscientist, and mother Mayim Bialik—a book hailed by Dr. William Sears as “delightful” and by Ricki Lake as “a fantastic guide to birth and parenting that is packed with invaluable wisdom.” Mayim Bialik was the child star of the popular 1990s TV sitcom Blossom, but she definitely didn’t follow the typical child-star trajectory. Instead, Mayim got her PhD in neuroscience from UCLA, married her college sweetheart, and had two kids. Mayim then did what many new moms do—she read a lot of books, talked with other parents, and she soon started questioning a lot of the conventional wisdom she heard about the “right” way to raise a child. That’s when she turned to Attachment Parenting, a philosophy and lifestyle popularized by well-known physicians like Dr. William Sears and Dr. Jay Gordon. To Mayim, Attachment Parenting’s natural, child-led approach not only felt right emotionally, it made sense intellectually and instinctually. She found that when she followed her intuition and relaxed into her role as a mother instead of following some rigid parenting script, both she and her children thrived. Taking into account her experience as a mother (and her scientific background), Mayim presents the major tenets of Attachment Parenting, including: Baby wearing: How to “wear” your baby in a sling or a wrap to foster a closer bond with your child—it’s possible even for mamas with bad backs (and with big babies)! Breastfeeding: Learn how to listen to your baby’s cues rather than sticking to a rigid schedule—and why people on airplanes love a nursing mother! Gentle discipline: How to get your child to behave without yelling, threats, or time-outs—it really is possible. Co-sleeping: How to avoid “sleep training” and get a great night’s sleep for the whole family. Without the pretense and luxuries typical of so many Hollywood actors and parents, Mayim describes the beauty, simplicity, and purposefulness of Attachment Parenting, and how it’s become the guiding principle for her family. Much more than a simple how-to parenting guide, Beyond the Sling shows us that the core principles underlying Attachment Parenting are universal and can be appreciated no matter how you decide to raise your child.

"Trust me. This is the only baby book you'll ever need! It's amazing, heartwarming, and completely user-friendly. Just add your heart!" --Christiane Northrup, MD, author of Mother-Daughter Wisdom, The Wisdom of Menopause, and Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom Attached at the Heart offers readers practical parenting advice for the modern age. In its most basic form, "attachment parenting" is instinctive. A crying baby is comforted and kept close to parents for protection. If hungry, he or she is breastfed. And while it is understood that there is no such thing as perfect parenting, research suggests that there is a strong correlation between a heightened sense of respect, empathy, and affection in those children raised the "attachment parenting" way. In this controversial book, readers will gain much needed insight into childrearing while learning to trust the intuitive knowledge of their child, ultimately building a strong foundation that will strengthen the parent-child bond. Using the Eight Principles of Parenting, readers will learn: How to prepare for baby before birth Why breastfeeding is a must for busy moms When to start feeding solid food How to respond to temper tantrums Sleeping safety guidelines and the benefits of cosleeping Tips for short separation How to practice positive discipline and its rewards Tips for finding and maintaining balance The benefits of using a baby sling and implementing infant massage Tips on dealing with criticism from those opposed or unfamiliar with AP style The dangers surrounding traditional discipline styles of parenting Contrary to popular belief, "attachment parenting" has been practiced in one form or another since recorded history. Over the years, it had been slowly replaced by a more detached parenting style—a style that is now believed by experts to be a lead contributing factor to suicide, depression, and violence. The concept of "attachment parenting"—a term originally coined by parenting experts William and Martha Sears—has increasingly been validated by research in many fields of study, such as child development, psychology, and neuroscience. Also known as "conscious parenting," "natural parenting," "compassionate parenting," or "empathic parenting," its goal is to stimulate optimal child development. While many attachment-parenting recommendations likely counter popular societal beliefs, authors Barbara Nicholson and Lysa Parker are quick to point out that the benefits outweigh the backlash of criticism that advocates of detached parenting may impose.

Throughout Western history, the societies that have made the greatest contributions to the spread of freedom have created iconic works of art to celebrate their achievements. Yet despite the enduring appeal of these works—from the Parthenon to Michelangelo’s David to Picasso’s Guernica—histories of both art and democracy have ignored this phenomenon. Millions have admired the artworks covered in this book but relatively few know why they were commissioned, what was happening in the culture that produced them, or what they were meant to achieve. Even scholars who have studied them for decades often miss the big picture by viewing them in isolation from a larger story of human striving. David’s Sling places into context ten canonical works of art executed to commemorate the successes of free societies that exerted political and economic influence far beyond what might have been expected of them. Fusing political and art history with a judicious dose of creative reconstruction, Victoria Coates has crafted a lively narrative around each artistic object and the free system that inspired it. This book integrates the themes of creative excellence and political freedom to bring a fresh, new perspective to both. In telling the stories of ten masterpieces, David’s Sling invites reflection on the synergy between liberty and human achievement.

Mayim Bialik, star of The Big Bang Theory and author of the #1 bestseller Girling Up, puts her Ph.D. to work to talk to teen boys about the science and pressures of growing up male in today's world. A must-have book for all teenage boys! Why does my voice crack like that? What should I eat to build muscle? How do I talk to someone I have a crush on? What do I do if someone calls me names or bullies me? Growing from a boy to a man is no easy task. Bodies are changing, social circles are evolving, hair is appearing in places it never was before -- and on top of it all, there's the ever-present pressure to conform to the typical idea of what it means to be "manly" and masculine. But it's easier to do if you're armed with facts. Using personal anecdotes as an overly observant mother of two boys and plenty of scientific information from her life as a neuroscientist, Mayim Bialik, PhD, star of The Big Bang Theory, talks directly to teen boys about what it means to grow from a boy to a man biologically, psychologically, and sociologically. Using the same cool, fun, and friendly tone that she took in Girling Up, Mayim takes boys--and their parents!--through the challenges and triumphs of Boying Up today. In six sections (How Boys Bodies Work; How Boys Grow; How Boys Learn; How Boys Cope; How Boys Love; and How Boys Make a Difference), she takes a look at what it means for boys to come of age in today's world, how can they take control of their paths, and what can they do to help shape the types of futures they want for themselves.

4GW (Fourth Generation Warfare) is the only kind of war America has ever lost. And we have done so three times – in Vietnam, Lebanon, and Somalia. I f rst encountered the Integral T eory system in the early 1990’s at the Royal Perth Hospital laboratory in Western Australia where I was working on laparoscopic colposuspension. Even in prototype form, the IVS operation was so simple and ef ective that I adopted it immediately. Subsequently, based on my experiences, I wrote the following in the Medical Journal of Australia in October 1994: (the operations) promise a new era for women, virtually pain-free cure of prolapse and incontinence without catheters, and return to normal activities within days. Now, ten years later, more than 500,000 ‘tension-free’ anterior or posterior sling operations have been performed. One case in particular stands out from those early years. A woman patient in her mid-50’s came to see me with a f ve year history of urinary retention which required an indwelling catheter. T is woman had consulted more than a dozen medical specialists who had told her the same story: no cure was possible. Using the Structured Assessment of the Integral T eory it was deduced that she had a posterior zone defect. I performed a Posterior IVS. T e next day the patient was voiding spontaneously with low residuals, and she has remained well since.

* Right Beyond the Horizon tells the gripping tale of Christopher's latest voyage between 2012 and 2016: a motorcycle adventure from Germany to Australia * This time, he's taken a right beyond the horizon... What if the journey of a lifetime becomes a lifelong journey? When people say "life's a journey," some take this aphorism more literally than others. Christopher Many embarked on an overland trip in 1997, believing he'd spend no more than a year or two on the road. Well, that didn't quite work out as planned; 19 years have passed, and he is still somewhere out there, doing what he loves most: circumnavigating the globe with vehicles of questionable reliability in a quest to understand, through first-hand experience, what makes humanity "tick". Right Beyond the Horizon tells the gripping tale of Christopher's latest voyage between 2012 and 2016: a motorcycle adventure from Germany to Australia, together with his partner Laura Pattara. Their modern-day odyssey follows the ancient Silk Road from Europe to Central Asia, then across the Pamir Mountains into China, where Christopher and Laura become the first overlanders with a foreign vehicle to obtain legal permission to transit the Middle Kingdom unescorted. Four years later they reach the harbor of Denpasar on the Indonesian island of Bali the gateway to Australia and terminus of the classic trans-Asia overland route. Come along for an exhilarating ride around the global block with this unusual vagabond and witness all the joys and hardships such a lifestyle entails every day will be full of surprises and utterly unpredictable! However, you should also be warned: some roads detour into the shadows where the scales of global justice are imbalanced and humanity's failings are all too evident. There's also a major risk that, after the last page, you'll feel inspired to pack your rucksack, free yourself from modern society's constraints and head off into the sunset indefinitely. You wouldn t be the first...
