In Coyote County, Christmas means festive lights, the town parade, hot coffee and cinnamon rolls...not creatures from another planet. While a glowing green Peeping Tom with two antennae is a little hard to buy, Libby Hawkins doesn't believe her former school teacher suffers from either dementia or a runaway imagination. There's a logical explanation, and she intends to discover it before the older woman is placed in a nursing home. After a twelve year absence, Sheriff Jackson Carter returns to Coyote County to clear his father's name. He never expected to be waylaid in his quest by alien sightings, and it doesn't help that stubborn Libby Hawkins—his former girlfriend—is determined to meddle in the investigation. He hurt Libby when he left town after his father's death, but it was for her protection. Now Libby's stumbled on something dangerous. Can he keep her from harm this time? He doesn't know, but one thing is certain: Christmas in Coyote County has never been so interesting.

Haunt is the second monograph by Dallas based photographer Misty Keasler and is a portrait of our culture and the study of fear as entertainment in commerical haunted houses. This work took Keasler to 13 haunts throughout the United States over the course of 2 years, where she was given unprecedented access to each location, shooting lengthy time exposures of uninhabited interiors and their facades on film, while additionally shooting formal portraits of their actors in costume. The resulting efforts yielded 146 vividly colorful, yet chilling photographs, that provide the viewer the space to experience the immense detail the proprietors of these haunts pour into them. In her essay, curator Andrea Karnes contextualizes this body of work within the conversation of contemporary photography as well as exploring its ties to the history of painting. An essay by sociologist and author Margee Kerr, provides an insider's glimpse of everything that makes up a great haunt, from the props to the psychological foundation of a good scare.

In Lousy Sex Gerald Callahan explores the science of self, illustrating the immune system’s role in forming individual identity. Blending the scientific essay with deeply personal narratives, these poignant and enlightening stories use microbiology and immunology to explore a new way to answer the question, who am I? “Self” has many definitions. Science has demonstrated that 90 percent of the cells in our bodies are bacteria—we are in many respects more non-self than self. In Lousy Sex, Callahan considers this microbio-neuro perspective on human identity together with the soulful, social perception of self, drawing on both art and science to fully illuminate this relationship. In his stories about where we came from and who we are, Callahan uses autobiographical episodes to illustrate his scientific points. Through stories about the sex lives of wood lice, the biological advantages of eating dirt, the question of immortality, the relationship between syphilis and the musical genius of Beethoven, and more, this book creates another way, a chimeric way, of seeing ourselves. The general reader with an interest in science will find Lousy Sex fascinating.

Los Angeles incarcerates more people than any other city in the United States, which imprisons more people than any other nation on Earth. This book explains how the City of Angels became the capital city of the world's leading incarcerator. Marshaling more than two centuries of evidence, historian Kelly Lytle Hernandez unmasks how histories of native elimination, immigrant exclusion, and black disappearance drove the rise of incarceration in Los Angeles. In this telling, which spans from the Spanish colonial era to the outbreak of the 1965 Watts Rebellion, Hernandez documents the persistent historical bond between the racial fantasies of conquest, namely its settler colonial form, and the eliminatory capacities of incarceration. But City of Inmates is also a chronicle of resilience and rebellion, documenting how targeted peoples and communities have always fought back. They busted out of jail, forced Supreme Court rulings, advanced revolution across bars and borders, and, as in the summer of 1965, set fire to the belly of the city. With these acts those who fought the rise of incarceration in Los Angeles altered the course of history in the city, the borderlands, and beyond. This book recounts how the dynamics of conquest met deep reservoirs of rebellion as Los Angeles became the City of Inmates, the nation's carceral core. It is a story that is far from over.
