Building on the success of its first five editions, the Sixth Edition of the market-leading text explores the important principles and real-world applications of plane, coordinate, and solid geometry. Strongly influenced by both NCTM and AMATYC standards, the text includes intuitive, inductive, and deductive experiences in its explorations. Goals of the authors for the students include a comprehensive development of the vocabulary of geometry, an intuitive and inductive approach to development of principles, and the strengthening of deductive skills that leads to both verification of geometric theories and the solution of geometry-based real world applications. Updates in this edition include the addition of 150 new problems, new applications, new Discover! activities and examples and additional material on select topics such as parabolas and a Three-Dimensional Coordinate System. Elementary Geometry

Elementary Geometry Author Ilka Agricola

Elementary geometry provides the foundation of modern geometry. For the most part, the standard introductions end at the formal Euclidean geometry of high school. Agricola and Friedrich revisit geometry, but from the higher viewpoint of university mathematics. Plane geometry is developed from its basic objects and their properties and then moves to conics and basic solids, including the Platonic solids and a proof of Euler's polytope formula. Particular care is taken to explain symmetry groups, including the description of ornaments and the classification of isometries by their number of fixed points. Complex numbers are introduced to provide an alternative, very elegant approach to plane geometry. The authors then treat spherical and hyperbolic geometries, with special emphasis on their basic geometric properties. This largely self-contained book provides a much deeper understanding of familiar topics, as well as an introduction to new topics that complete the picture of two-dimensional geometries. For undergraduate mathematics students the book will be an excellent introduction to an advanced point of view on geometry. For mathematics teachers it will be a valuable reference and a source book for topics for projects. The book contains over 100 figures and scores of exercises. It is suitable for a one-semester course in geometry for undergraduates, particularly for mathematics majors and future secondary school teachers.

Hyperbolic geometry is in a period of revised interest. This book contains a substantial account of the parts of the theory basic to the study of Kleinian groups, but it also contains the more broad-reaching thoughts of the author, one of the pioneers in the theory of convex bodies and a major contributor in other fields of mathematics. Although extensively revised, this new edition continues in the fine tradition of its predecessor. Major changes include: a notation that formalizes the distinction between equality and congruence and between line, ray and line segment; a completely rewritten chapter on mathematical logic with inclusion of truth tables and the logical basis for the discovery of non-Euclidean geometries; expanded coverage of analytic geometry with more theorems discussed and proved with coordinate geometry; two distinct chapters on parallel lines and parallelograms; a condensed chapter on numerical trigonometry; more problems; expansion of the section on surface areas and volume; and additional review exercises at the end of each chapter. Concise and logical, it will serve as an excellent review of high school geometry.

Elementary Geometry of Algebraic Curves

Elementary Geometry of Algebraic Curves Author C. G. Gibson

Pages 250

Here is an introduction to plane algebraic curves from a geometric viewpoint, designed as a first text for undergraduates in mathematics, or for postgraduate and research workers in the engineering and physical sciences. The book is well illustrated and contains several hundred worked examples and exercises. From the familiar lines and conics of elementary geometry the reader proceeds to general curves in the real affine plane, with excursions to more general fields to illustrate applications, such as number theory. By adding points at infinity the affine plane is extended to the projective plane, yielding a natural setting for curves and providing a flood of illumination into the underlying geometry. A minimal amount of algebra leads to the famous theorem of Bezout, while the ideas of linear systems are used to discuss the classical group structure on the cubic.

"This short book, first published in 1897, addresses three geometry puzzles that have been passed down from ancient times. Written for high school students, this book aims to show a younger audience why math should matter and to make the problems found in math intriguing. Klein presents for his readers an investigation of the possibility or impossibility of finding solutions for the following problems in light of mathematics available to him: duplication of the cube trisection of an angle quadrature of the circle Mathematicians and students of the history of math will find this an intriguing work. German mathematician FELIX KLEIN (1849 1925), a great teacher and scientific thinker, significantly advanced the field of mathematical physics and made a number of profound discoveries in the field of geometry. His published works include Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint: Arithmetic, Algebra, Analysis and Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint: Geometry."
