The failed states of Iraq and Syria plus the rise and fall of ISIS have helped lead to near Kurdish statehood in Iraq (the KRG) and Kurdish autonomy in Syria (Rojava). In Turkey too—as illustrated by its negotiations and temporary cease-fire with the PKK and the rise of the HDP as the first pro-Kurdish party to be elected to the Turkish parliament as a party and not as mere independents—the Kurds have reached new heights of recognition. These major developments and much more are prominently reflected and developed in this new third edition of Historical Dictionary of the Kurds. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of the Kurds contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture of the Kurds. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Kurds.

This dictionary uses the latin script and the Northern Kurdish (urmanji) dialect. We also publish resources for the Sorani dialect. Check our website for availability. Kurdish began to appear in writing in a version of the Persian alphabet during the 7th century AD. However, for much of their history, the Kurds have prefered to use Arabic, Persian or Turkish for their literary works. Since 1932 Kurdish has been written with the Latin alphabet in Turkey and Syria. Before then, it was written with a version of the Arabic script. In parts of the former USSR it is written with a version of the Cyrillic alphabet, and in Soviet Armenia it was written with a version of the Armenian alphabet. When Kurdish is written with the Arabic script, Arabic loan words retain their original spelling, though they are often pronounced quite differently in Kurdish. This dictionary uses the latin script and the Northern Kurdish (Kurmanji) dialect. It contains over 12,000 words in English and Kurmanji with parts of speech and definitions in English with a Kurmanji / English index included. It is excerpted from our Words R Us system which is a derivative of Princeton Wordnet. We also publish a Turkish / Kurdish / English Dictionary and a Kurdish Dictionary in the Sorani script as well as books on Kurdish Grammar. See our website for availability. www.wordsrus.info

This is the first comprehensive study (in any language) of the historical, literary and sociolinguistic foundations of Kurdish nationalism and the conflict with the Iraqi state since its emergence under the British mandate. While it is focused on the Kurds of Iraq, the conflict between the Kurds and the central governments of Turkey, Iran, Syria and the USSR receives adequate research attention. Language is the most important indicator of Kurdish identity. The right to native-tongue education and media has been the most important demand of Kurdish nationalism in the post-WW I period. In their attempt to survive linguistic genocide, Kurdish intellectuals, political activists, and religious leaders struggled for the development of a unified national language. Standardization is treated as language development, similar and closely related to social, economic, and political development. The approach here is interdisciplinary, cutting across a number of fields in social sciences -- sociolinguistics, political science, mass media studies, education, and policy studies.
