People in the horse world know all too well that performance horses, like human athletes, are trained, fed and cared for so they can go faster, jump higher and run longer. Daily training and competing can result in injuries, aches and pains, which if treated by drugs alone may only mask the problem and not remedy it. This is why equine massage therapist Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt created a program of techniques that will enable owners and riders, trainers and grooms to: li>Alleviate soreness and pain in the horse's most vulnerable stress sites Identify and treat the injuries common to any horse sport Use relaxation and maintenance routines for the horse's mental and physical well-being BR>The Howell Equestrian Library

The controlled stretching of muscles has been an integral part of the training of human athletes for many years, and scientific studies and results in the field have both proven beyond doubt the value of stretch exercise in improving performance and guarding against injury. Active stretching both before and after exercise helps tone the muscles and ensure a good range of movement, and no professional athlete would ever expect to perform at full potential without it—yet riders ask their horses to do so all the time. Following extensive research into the subject, occupational therapist and equestrian trainer Karin Blignault has written this innovative and thought-provoking book to show how the principles so long applied to human athletes can also be applied to the horse to prevent injury, alleviate pain, and improve performance. Blignault thoroughly explains the basic anatomy and physiology of muscles and their associated tissues, how muscles work together in groups, and which exercises benefit which muscles. The individual exercises are explained in detail, with clear, specific instructions designed to ensure that they are carried out with no risk of injury to horse or human. Stretch Exercises for Your Horse will be of great interest to all owners and trainers of sport horses, and, indeed, to all those who wish to contribute to the constructive development of the horses they ride.

Horse riders, horse lovers, and equestrians everywhere will enjoy this new book from our favorite controversial chiropractor, Dr. Daniel Kamen. Dr. Dan explains how any horse owner or stable keeper can take proper care of their animal. These animals are the same equine version of highly trained athletes, he says, and like any athlete they are susceptible to strain or injury. Whether the patient is human or animal, the basic chiropractic technique--manipulating the spine to return misaligned bones to their proper position--is the same. Kamen says, "If it has a spine, I can work on it." With the aid of a few bales of hay for height, and a few of these easy-to-follow techniques which are accompanied by over 170 illustrations, you can give your animal the proper care he needs to keep him on track. Dr. Kamen has treated racehorses for what he terms "a nagging backache." With this trademark humor and anecdotes about his adventures as an animal chiropractor, Dr. Kamen has again delivered a book that will delight owner and animal alike. A wonderful gift for horse lovers. About the Author Dr. Daniel Kamen was born in Chicago, Illinois and has been practicing chiropractic since 1981. His father is a highly respected anesthesiologist; his mother, a gifted artist. Dr. Kamen's original animal chiropractic organization, "Animal Crackers," produced animal chiropractic educational materials, which taught others how to adjust dogs and horses. Dr. Kamen lives with his wife, Sharon, of thirty-four years. Together they have three sons, Jeffrey, Gary and Kevin. He makes his home in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. Dr. Kamen has been featured in many TV, radio, and newspaper stories concerning his work with animal chiropractic. He currently is on tour, teaching a professional as well as a lay lecture seminar on animal chiropractic (horse and dog adjusting). His hobbies include playing the piano and chess (master level). Books by Daniel Kamen include: "The Well Adjusted Dog, The Well Adjusted Horse, The Well Adjusted Cat" and a novel entitled "Stagecoach Road: The Bullies Must Die."

Articulating Medieval Logic

Terence Parsons presents a new study of the development and logical complexity of medieval logic. Basic principles of logic were used by Aristotle to prove conversion principles and reduce syllogisms. Medieval logicians expanded Aristotle's notation in several ways, such as quantifying predicate terms, as in 'No donkey is every animal', and allowing singular terms to appear in predicate position, as in 'Not every donkey is Brownie'; with the enlarged notation come additional logical principles. The resulting system of logic is able to deal with relational expressions, as in De Morgan's puzzles about heads of horses. A crucial issue is a mechanism for dealing with anaphoric pronouns, as in 'Every woman loves her mother'. Parsons illuminates the ways in which medieval logic is as rich as contemporary first-order symbolic logic, though its full potential was not envisaged at the time. Along the way, he provides a detailed exposition and examination of the theory of modes of common personal supposition, and the useful principles of logic included with it. An appendix discusses the artificial signs introduced in the fifteenth century to alter quantifier scope.
