In this thoroughly revised third edition, Kopp and Naland provide an up-to-date, authoritative, and candid account of the life and work of professional US diplomats, who advance and protect this country’s national security interests around the globe. The authors explore the five career tracks—consular, political, economic, management, and public diplomacy—through their own experience and through interviews with more than a hundred current and former members of the Foreign Service. They lay out what to expect in a Foreign Service career, from the entrance exam through midcareer and into the senior service—how to get in, get around, and get ahead. New in the third edition: • A discussion of the relationship of the Foreign Service and the Department of State to other agencies, and to the combatant commands • An expanded analysis of hiring procedures• Commentary on challenging management issues in the Department of State, including the proliferation of political appointments in high-level positions and the difficulties of running an agency with employees in two personnel systems (Civil Service and Foreign Service) • A fresh examination of the changing nature and demographics of the Foreign Service

Everyone knows: wars are getting worse, more civilians are dying, and peacemaking achieves nothing, right? Wrong. Despite all the bad-news headlines, peacekeeping is working. Fewer wars are starting, more are ending, and those that remain are smaller and more localized. But peace doesn’t just happen; it needs to be put into effect. Moreover, understanding the global decline in armed conflict is crucial as America shifts to an era of lower military budgets and operations. Preeminent scholar of international relations, Joshua Goldstein, definitively illustrates how decades of effort by humanitarian aid agencies, popular movements—and especially the United Nations—have made a measureable difference in reducing violence in our times. Goldstein shows how we can continue building on these inspiring achievements to keep winning the war on war. This updated and revised edition includes more information on a post-9-11 world, and is a perfect compendium for those wishing to learn more about the United States’ armed conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A Structured Guide to Career Selection

This workbook employs a revolutionary approach to assisting students in selecting a career or college course. Using the structured thinking methodology of Dr. Edward de Bono, this workbook will lead the student in a simple, yet comprehensive, step-by-step exploration of all their choices. The main objective of the work is that the student themselves look at all their options and make selections based on personal goals and interests. The workbook exercises are divided into 7 simple steps: 1. Personal goals and ambitions are listed. 2. Factors which affect careers are explored 3. Alternatives are then selected (a suggested list of over 200 is given) 4. Facts about each of the 20 choices must then be assembled. 5. Having assembled the facts on each career the student is then directed in a simple assessment of the choices. This is done with an emphasis on objectivity. Pros and cons will be explored equally. 6. Based on the data assembled in step 4, and the assessment of options in step 5, the picture should now be much clearer. The student should now be in a position to make their choices based on knowledge and objective assessment. 7. The final step is to plan a simple strategy. This will involve planning the steps required to achieve the career of their choice. The work can be done by the student working alone but would benefit more by being completed in a classroom context where processes are discussed under guidance. It is not suggested that this manual should replace, but rather complement, the standard procedures of career guidance.

A national bestseller on its original publication in 2003, Madam Secretary is a riveting account of the life of America's first woman Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright. For eight years, during Bill Clinton's two presidential terms, Albright was a high-level participant in some of the most dramatic events of our time—from the pursuit of peace in the Middle East to NATO's intervention in the Balkans to America's troubled relations with Iran and Iraq. In this thoughtful memoir, one of the most admired women in U.S. history reflects on her remarkable personal story, including her upbringing in war-torn Europe and the balancing of career and family responsibilities, and on America's leading role in a changing world. With a new epilogue by the author, Madam Secretary offers an inimitable blend of Albright's warm humor, probing insights, and distinctive ideas.
