These are the folks who practice chip shots in elevators with invisible wedges. These are the people on the golf course in parkas on the first day the temperature tops 30 degrees. These are the junkies who spend hundreds of hours searching pharmaceutical companies' websites for a cure for the "yips". These golfers are "nuts" and the anecdotal stories of Golf Nuts are proof. In pathological putting circles, author Ron Garland is known as the "Head Nut" of the Golf Nuts Society, an organization that he founded which now boasts a vast membership of "nuts", and these are his favorite accounts from a group of seemingly normal people with an abnormal obsession.

When Michael Andrew Quinlan entered the world in 1942 in Washington, DC, his birth was a miracle. According to at least one physician, his very conception was impossible. Twelve inches long, two-and-a-half months premature and weighing just over three pounds, Mike survived and thrived for the next sixty-six years. But in 2009, he died suddenly, just twelve days after being diagnosed with mantle cell B lymphoma, a virulent form of cancer that is difficult to diagnose. In Mike: A Man for Others, author William Allen Quinlan, Jr., Mike’s brother, narrates Mike’s story and the significant impact he had on those around him. The author presents a personal history that is part memoir and part biography, chronicling his brother’s life—his birth as the youngest of three boys; his parental background; his upbringing in Bethesda, Maryland; and his days as a student, US Marine, successful food and beverage manager, dedicated and accomplished golfer, certified member of the Golf Nut Society of America; and a loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather. Always heartfelt and sincere, and sometimes humorous, Mike: A Man for Others celebrates Mike Quinlan’s life, shares his stories, and teaches about loving life to the fullest, about giving, not taking.

NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR, ELLE CASEY, brings readers the romantic chick lit novel, DESPERATE MEASURES. [Formerly titled Desperate Measures Trilogy: Book 1, Full Measure, published under Elle Casey’s alter ego, Kat Lee.] Drawn together over a love of books, three women strike up an unlikely friendship, and end up forming bonds that move well beyond what any of them ever imagined possible. Desperate Measures serves up laughter, romance, cookies, tea - and a whole lot of love. Aimee: A housewife left in the dust by her philandering husband, with an outdated high school education but a serious talent when it comes to confections... Elizabeth: An accountant tired of crunching numbers for hundreds of clients with more money than they know what to do with... Kiki: An exotic dancer who wants nothing more than to get out of the game... Content warning: Due to sexy situations and content, this book is definitely not appropriate for younger readers. A message from Elle about this book: Being a huge bookworm myself, the idea of writing a story about friends finding one another through books was really appealing to me. One thing I’ve learned about people who love books is that they come in all shapes and sizes and from all backgrounds and places, but the common ground of literature somehow makes everything work. When I was younger, I was the only bookworm I knew. Now that I’m an adult, I’ve found the joy of seeking others out and spending time with them. It’s like a whole new world has opened up to me, and so of course I wanted to write about it! Not that I have a former stripper in my book club or anything… HERE’S WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT DESPERATE MEASURES: “The friendship that the three leading ladies have is priceless and the men they coming into their lives are just as awesome. Such a cute, funny endearing story with some pretty exciting moments… to boot. It's a must read…” ~ Kindle Customer, Amazon “I am a huge fan of Elle Casey/Kat Lee so when I saw this book pop up on Amazon I had to get it! I love that out of the three girls you can identify with at least one, if not all of them. I highly recommend this book for a great read and laugh, I loved it! Keep 'em coming!” ~ LisaDan, Amazon reviewer “Elle Casey (Kat Lee) is proving to be my new favorite author… Full Measure is both entertaining and insightful. The characters bloom in front of you. I don't normally write reviews, but this just got to me. I found myself relating to all of the characters in many ways…” ~ aapbutterfly, Amazon reviewer “I loved this book… It has drama, action and hilarity. I actually laughed out loud quite a lot. I adored Betty and her comments. The characters are three ladies that you wish you became friends with. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great story and laughter.” ~ Shara, Goodreads reviewer

The body of the Masters rules committee chairman is found in the middle of the 10th fairway on the morning that Sam Skarda arrives at Augusta National Golf Club to play in his first Masters. Skarda, a 33-year-old police detective on medical leave from the Minneapolis police department, is an accomplished amateur golfer who won the U.S. Publinx and an invitation to play in the Masters while rehabbing a shooting injury suffered on the job. Evidence left at the crime scene suggests the murder might have been tied to the ongoing protest by a women's group that has been demanding that the club admit women members. Then a crusading New York Times columnist is murdered on the grounds of the club two days later. Local police suspect the murders might have been committed by a member and begin pressuring the new Augusta National president for access to the club's membership information. The club chairman asks Skarda for help finding the killer before the police thoroughly invade Augusta National's legendary privacy. Skarda looks for answers from members, veteran journalists, longtime caddies and ex-employees who may know why someone is determined to bring this year's Masters to a halt. He also falls for Caroline Rockingham, the soon-to-be ex-wife of one of the pre-tournament favorites, a former college golf teammate of Skarda's. Sam and Caroline themselves become targets as the murders continue and pressure to cancel the tournament builds. Meanwhile, the killer methodically prepares for a spectacular and deadly Sunday climax.

Committed is a bold, offbeat, globe-trotting memoir that shows how the most ridiculed punching bag in high school became an internationally renowned crusader for the most downtrodden individuals of all -- animals. This irresistibly entertaining book recounts the unorthodox coming-of-age that inspired a reluctant party boy to devote his life to a cause, without ever abandoning his sense of mischief and fun. Mathews is the irreverent force behind the colorful crusades carried out by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), making animal rights the "it" cause with campaigns involving nude protestors, odd costumes, and celebrities as diverse as Pamela Anderson and Sir Paul McCartney. With self-deprecating wit and candor, he reveals the edgy details of his outrageous career, which has found him arrested naked on the streets of Hong Kong, dressed as a carrot outside grade schools in Iowa (where he was pelted with luncheon meats), and impersonating a priest to crash a fashion show in Milan. From the rock scene in Hollywood and London to the inner sanctums of New York high fashion and from jails in Boston to a psychiatric ward in Paris, Committed spotlights the adventures life can offer when you don't abandon your ideals and imagination with your youth.

As a teenager in Nottingham, Tom Cox was possessed. Despite the best endeavours of his frankly rather groovy parents, nascent fashion sense and regular exposure to credible music from an early age, he was inexorably drawn into the bizarre, esoteric world that is golf, with its male-bonding rituals and strange trousers. And thus a strange hybrid was born -- from 1988 to 1995, Tom was Midlands golf's answer to Iggy Pop. Assisted by his fellow junior members at the local club, he cut a swathe through the golfing establishment, putting dead animals in his fellow golfers' shoes, setting fire to the club professional's shop, bringing Colin Montgomerie close to tears and repeatedly wearing the wrong colour of socks. On the golf course he felt simultaneously at home and somehow alienated. But Tom also wanted to be (and became) the best, taking five years out of normal adolescent existence to live, breathe, walk and talk nothing but the sport he loved. Nice Jumper is the story of how Tom tried to fit in, failed, got down to a handicap of two, tried to fit in again, got suspended from the club, got corrupted by rock and roll, then attempted to corrupt golf itself. Original, poignant and highly entertaining, it's a book about one teenager's obsessive attempts to attain sporting nirvana - despite the slings and arrows of outrageous fashion.

Ten Days In a Mad-House (1887) by Nellie Bly. Nellie Bly (1864-1922) was the pen name of American journalist Elizabeth Jane Cochrane. She was a ground-breaking reporter known for a record-breaking trip around the world in 72 days, in emulation of Jules Verne's fictional character Phileas Fogg, and an exposé in which she faked insanity to study a mental institution from within. She was a pioneer in her field, and launched a new kind of investigative journalism. Nellie Bly, whose given name was Elizabeth Jane Cochran, was a pio-neer of investigative journalism. She died in 1922. Of her many exposé assignments for Joseph Pulitzer’s NEW YORK WORLD, her voluntary (and undercover) journey into the "lunatic asylum” on Blackwell’s (now Roosevelt) Island is perhaps the most well known. In previous chapters of the series, she has (without much difficulty) fooled various doctors and authorities into deeming her insane and admitting her tothe asylum, which is located on an island just east of Manhattan. "SINCE my experiences in Blackwell's Island Insane Asylum were published in the World I have received hundreds of letters in regard to it. The edition containing my story long since ran out, and I have been prevailed upon to allow it to be published in book form, to satisfy the hundreds who are yet asking for copies.
