"Scum is a masterfully written book in which Williams, by means of a particularly effective form of fragmentation of language, captures the disjunctive experience of a terrified boy. The life of the boy and the life of the sentences are lived entirely in the collision of the will to survive and the impossible demands of an incomprehensible, utterly senseless reality. There are no happy endings in Williams' books, but far more valuable is the vitality that is generated in his deft and original use of language." -- Thomas Ogden

Agent Jim Huggins is embroiled in the largest case of his career. He was recruited shortly after graduating from Illinois. After a short stint with the Bureau the government set up a new agency that would concentrate on International Intelligence. Since he had a passion for intelligence he was offered a job within the new agency. He was assigned to the midwest office based in Chicago. What follows is an excerpt from the story. The school bus stopped at the corner, the tall long haired blonde girl with designer cut jeans got on board and waved at the other students on the bus and said hello to the driver. Today I noticed it was not the same driver that drove the bus for the past three weeks. It was a young woman that appeared to be in her middle thirties with dark brown hair cropped short in a bob, she was not wearing a wedding band but she had a Bluetooth or something stuck in her left ear so she could communicate with whoever she was talking to. She acknowledged the blonde girl, looked at her student ID and checked her log sheet to make sure she was supposed to be on this bus. Then the bus proceeded down the street until it got to the next corner where it stopped to pick up other students. As for me I could continue my surveillance. The blonde girl named Elisia is the daughter of the man I am following. He is believed to be a spy from an eastern European country that was once part of the Soviet Union. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union most of the satellite countries have their own networks. Why he is under surveillance is not my concern, my boss Rodger Allen McCray Field Supervisor Chicago office of international intelligence (I.I.A.) issued the order. Keep an eye on Karl Buranski record his every move and keep an eye on his family to see who they are in contact with. The third volume of memoirs from the author who inspired the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small Training as an RAF pilot in the smoke and bustle of London is a far cry from James Herriot’s day job as a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales. And while he is keen to serve Queen and country, James cannot help but miss his life in Darrowby – despite frequent arguments between his colleagues, ornery cattle and equally ornery farmers, and the continuing saga of Cedric the flatulent dog. But most of all he misses his wife Helen; pregnant with their first child. The question is constantly hanging over him – will he be going to war? And when will he get to go home? Since they were first published, James Herriot’s memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Things Wise and Wonderful is a heart-warming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain’s best-loved authors.

The very special magic of James Herriot’s storytelling shines throughout this classic collection of stories about the animal he loves the most. Here are some of the dogs who have won a special place in the country vet’s heart – dogs like Tricki Woo, the little Pekinese suffering from ‘flop-butt’; Clancy the dog who nobody would go near; and Gyp, the sheepdog who only barked once in his life. They’re joined by lovable dogs of all shapes and sizes in a wonderful collection of stories, which will be enjoyed by all dog-lovers and James Herriot fans alike. ‘The tales can be read and re-read... what shines through all the stories is that dogs give us enormous pleasure.’ Sunday Times ‘James Herriot provokes a chuckle, or a lump in your throat, in every chapter.’ Daily Mirror

There are certain beliefs that are fixed, immutable. These beliefs include our faith around communion, marriage, baptism, etc. Much like the foundation of a house, these beliefs do not change and are the foundations of life. They are what we refer to when we worship, ..".from generation to generation and unto the ages of all ages." This book is not about those beliefs. It is, however, about our ability to adapt to how we serve God's people. In Mark 3, Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath. He did this to show people how much culture has corrupted faith. While the Pharisees fixated on Sabbath rules and complained, Jesus adapted to show people that He loved them first. Much like a wise surgeon, Jesus extracted the cancer of legalism and brought people back to the spirit behind the beliefs, both literally and metaphorically. While theological and scholarly depths have been reached, we have barely scratched the surface on the way we serve and spread the Gospel in the Coptic faith. This deserves deeper exploration. I hope the journey through this book will enrich your faith and help you seek out the truth. For that is where God lives. He is a God of Truth; He is the way, the truth, and the life; He is the Spirit of Truth.

This fast-paced action novel is set in a future where the world has been almost destroyed. Like the award-winning novel Freak the Mighty, this is Philbrick at his very best. It's the story of an epileptic teenager nicknamed Spaz, who begins the heroic fight to bring human intelligence back to the planet. In a world where most people are plugged into brain-drain entertainment systems, Spaz is the rare human being who can see life as it really is. When he meets an old man called Ryter, he begins to learn about Earth and its past. With Ryter as his companion, Spaz sets off an unlikely quest to save his dying sister -- and in the process, perhaps the world.
