Type II diabetes has developed into a global epidemic, with nearly 20 type II patients for every type I individual. Preceding the onset of type II diabetes is a prolonged episode of insulin resistance featuring a host of detrimental symptoms. This period comprises a disease referred to as Insulin Resistance Syndrome or Metabolic Syndrome. Insulin Resistance and Insulin Resistance Syndrome deals with the cellular and whole body pathogenic mechanisms and phenotypic expressions in various models of insulin resistance. Leaders in the field provide their perspectives on the mechanisms of insulin resistance, as observed in various animal models. While the exact mechanism underlying resistance to insulin is unknown, the authors review many of the significant factors. A series of chapters on Metabolic Syndrome discusses its possible insulin resistance-associated pathophysiology with obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and abnormalities in whole body metabolism. Presenting essential knowledge in the field of insulin resistance, this book will benefit clinicians, pharmaceutical scientists, and researchers involved in endocrinology, biochemistry and metabolism in diabetes.

As the incidence of diabetes increases worldwide, the need for recommendations on how to prevent and treat the condition grows exponentially, and so does the need for an authoritative source for information on the appropriate models to study the condition. The new edition of Animal Models of Diabetes is that source. The book presents updated and expanded information regarding the use of models in experiments with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The new edition compiles relevant time-saving information on well-recognized models, including various mice, rats, minipigs, and Rhesus monkeys, and provides extensive references for more in-depth study. It contains new and updated referenced reviews on animals with induced obesity as well as observations on retinopathy in spontaneous diabetes resembling human lesions. The book discusses nutritionally diabetes-prone animals and considerations of insulin resistance and obesity. The contributors also address the importance of recent findings on the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications in relation to human disease. Including contributions from prominent experts in the field, the book brings together scattered data and lucidly presents it. This promotes the understanding of the etiopathology of diabetes and offers a new grasp of the insulin action, its negative feedback leading to insulin resistance, and its detrimental outcomes. The book also includes new knowledge on specific complications of diabetes, offering an incentive to test advanced modalities to prevent and inhibit their occurrence.

Diabetes and cardiovascular disease together account for the largest portion of health care spending compared to all other diseases in Western society. This work seeks to provide an understanding of the causes of diabetes and its cardiovascular complications. As this understanding becomes more widely appreciated, it will serve as a foundation for evidence-based care and wider acceptance of sound science. The International Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease, held in Winnipeg, in June 1999, was organized to bring together a multi-disciplinary group of researchers dedicated to further knowledge amongst researchers, care givers, and the managers of the health system. The invited speakers submitted their works for publication, which serves as the basis for this book. Major themes include: epidemiology of diabetes mellitus, metabolic risk factors in diabetes and cardiovascular disease, hypertension in diabetes mellitus, cardiac function in diabetes, glycemic control and improved cardiovascular function, diabetes management, and endothelial function in diabetes.

The search for knowledge on cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in skeletal muscle mass homeostasis and regeneration is an exciting scientific area and extremely important to develop therapeutic strategies for neuromuscular disorders and conditions related to muscle wasting. The mechanisms involved in the regulation of skeletal muscle mass and regeneration consist of molecular signaling pathways modulating protein synthesis and degradation, bioenergetics alterations and preserved function of muscle stem cells. In the last years, different kinds of stem cells has been reported to be localized into skeletal muscle (satellite cells, mesoangioblasts, progenitor interstitial cells and others) or migrate from non-muscle sites, such as bone marrow, to muscle tissue in response to injury. In addition, myogenic progenitor cells are also activated in skeletal muscle wasting disorders. The goal of this research topic is to highlight the available knowledge regarding skeletal muscle and stem cell biology in the context of both physiological and pathological conditions. Our purpose herein is to facilitate better dissemination of research into skeletal muscle physiology field. This volume, written by renowned experts, provides complete coverage of the main genetic conditions associated with diabetes. Divided into five sections, it offers insights into genetic defects involving the pancreatic beta cell, extreme insulin resistance, ciliopathies, obesity and glucose metabolism, chromosomal defects, and other genetic conditions associated with increased susceptibility to diabetes. Other topics include the various subtypes of monogenic diabetes, such as the neonatal form and the Wolfram syndrome, as well as chromosomal defects leading to complex conditions affiliated with diabetes, like Trisomy 21 or Prader-Willi syndrome. There are also chapters dedicated to the poorly explored relationships between metabolism and neurodegenerative disorders like Friedreich’s ataxia and muscular dystrophy. This book is a reference for every pediatric and adult endocrinologist and diabetologist, even experienced ones, with an interest in the intricacies and protean aspects of disorders of glucose metabolism secondary to genetic diseases.

Molecular and Cellular Approaches to Neural Development

Molecular and Cellular Approaches to Neural Development Author W. Maxwell Cowan

Release 1997
Pages 563

Comprehensive, up-to-date and authoritative, this volume covers all the recent advances in understanding the early events of neural development at the molecular and cellular levels. The authors detail the applications of molecular genetic methods to the study of neural induction, neuronal phenotypes and processes, and the formation of specific patterns of connections. They analyze the new information generated through modern techniques for identifying, cloning, deleting and introducing specific genes, for labeling neuronal or glial precursors, and for imaging individual neurons or parts of neurons. Other chapters focus on the increasing use of a variety of model organisms: fruit flies, nematode worms, zebra fish, xenopus frogs, chicks, and mice. The improved conservation of DNA and protein sequences, and the availability of gene and protein databases have made it possible to rapidly identify gene homologues in organisms sometimes separated by hundreds of millions of years of evolution. This volume features several chapters co-authored by investigators one of whom works on vertebrates and the other on invertebrates. They demonstrate clearly that although the nervous systems of a fruit fly and a mouse, for example, are quite different in appearance and organization, many of the same molecular players and cellular processes are involved in their assembly. Molecular and Cellular Approaches to Neural Development will be of great practical interest to researchers, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in developmental, cell and molecular biology, genetics, and neuroscience.
