While it is responsible for today’s abundance of flat screens—on televisions, computers, and mobile devices—most of us have only heard of it in the ubiquitous acronym, LCD, with little thought as to exactly what it is: liquid crystal. In this book, Esther Leslie enlightens us, offering an accessible and fascinating look at—not a substance, not a technology—but a wholly different phase of matter. As she explains, liquid crystal is a curious material phase that organizes a substance’s molecules in a crystalline form yet allows them to move fluidly like water. Observed since the nineteenth century, this phase has been a deep curiosity to science and, in more recent times, the key to a new era of media technology. In between that time, as Leslie shows, it has figured in cultural forms from Romantic landscape painting to snow globes, from mountaineering to eco-disasters, and from touchscreen devices to DNA. Expertly written but accessible, Liquid Crystals recounts the unheralded but hugely significant emergence of this unique form of matter.

The Study of Languages is one of James Joyce's first essays and an early indication of his lifelong interest in philology, the focus of this volume of essays. The collection investigates three aspects of Joycean linguistics. The first set of essays studies the language of Joyce's later writings. In the second part, Joyce's own linguistic investigations are retraced. The third part examines the historical context of 'popular philology'. This volume sheds light on the relationship between Joyce's later writings and his reading of studies by linguists such as Richard Paget, Charles Kay Ogden, Ivor Armstrong Richards, Fritz Mauthner, Otto Jespersen, Richard Chenevix Trench and Max Muller. Based on notebook research and textual genetics, these essays show how important the study of languages was to Joyce and how it played a crucial role in the development of his writings as it contributed and gave shape to the languages of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. Contents: Geert Lernout/Dirk Van Hulle: Introduction - Sam Slote: « Odd's without Ends: Raymond Queneau and the Twisted Language of the Wake - Finn Fordham: The corrections to Finnegans Wake: For « reading read « readings (VI.H.4.b-2; JJA 63: 352) - Erika Rosiers/Wim Van Mierlo: Neutral Auxiliaries and Universal Idioms: Otto Jespersen in Work in Progress - Ingeborg Landuyt: The Revolution of Language: James Joyce and Cymbeline - Laurent Milesi: Supplementing Babel: Paget in VI.B.32 - Dirk Van Hulle: « Out of Metaphor: Mauthner, Richards and the Development of Wakese - Gregory M. Investigates how the Irish cultural debate informed O'Nolan's early fiction and journalism. This work offers an assessment of his work in its Irish context, arguing that his self-reflexive comic writing betrays a crisis of literary identity that is rooted in the cultural dynamics of post-Independence Ireland.

An extraordinary look at an ordinary dayJune 16, 1904in the life of a middle-aged Jewish man living in Dublin, Ireland. Leopold Bloom, who is sure that his wife is being unfaithful, must come to terms with how that affects their marriage and whether it changes the nature of their love for one another. Richly detailed stream-of-consciousness narration immerses the reader in the thoughts and emotions of the characters as they deal with the normal events of daily life in Dublin, as well as grander issues like sexuality, prejudice, birth, and death. This is an unabridged version of Irish author James Joyce's groundbreaking modernist tale, which parallels Homer's Odyssey. It was first published serially in the American journal The Little Review between 1918 and 1921, and published in novel form in 1922 in Paris.
