Volume II of III This is an impressive history by the most prolific author of Great War divisional and regimental histories, a fine tribute to a regiment that contributed 49 battalions to the nation's war effort, 26 of them served overseas, including the 2nd Battalion which was in India in August 1914 and remained there throughout the war. It is also a tribute to the author who died in 1933, before he could finish the third volume; the final few chapters were completed by Capt W. Synge of the 1st Battalion. All 23 front line battalions served on the Western Front, one of them (14th) in Salonika as well. The Roll of Honour lists 14,200 dead, six VCs were won, one of them by an officer (Capt O.A.Reid) attached to another regiment, and 58 Battle Honours were awarded. This work is set out in chronological order, each volume dealing with a specific period and ending with the Roll of Honour for that period and citations for any VC. Dates are in the margin and so is the identification of the battalion involved in the action being described. Volume 2 takes the narrative through 1916 to 30 June 1917 and the Arras offensive. As it may be imagined, there is plenty of detail in a history so generous with space as this, with its three volumes, and the narrative is supported with clear maps.

This second of the fine five-volume unit history of the King's Royal Rifle Corps begins with the development of the unit's characteristic weapon - the rifle - and of its equally ubiquitous uniform, the green jacket, under its Colonel, Baron Francis de Rothenburg. It details the unit's role in crushing the Irish rebellion of 1798, and in repelling the French invasion of Ireland in the same year. The Rifle Battalions then saw service in their old battlegrounds of the Americas, in Martinique, Surinam and Halifax, Novia Scotia, before returning to Europe to take part in the Peninsula War against Napoleon. They came under the command of both Sir Arthur Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) and Sir John Moore, repelling the French invasion of Portugal and fighting at Rolica and Vimiero. Under Wellesley, the Battalions pursued Marshal Victor, taking part in the Battle of Talavera. They manned Wellington's impregnable Lines of Torres Vedras, thwarting Marshal Massena's invasion of Portugal, relieved Almeida and took part in the battles of Fuentes de Onoro and Albuera. The Battalion fought Marshal Marmont at Arroyo Molinos, stormed Ciudad Roderigo and Badajoz, and took part in the Battle of Salamanca and the siege of Burgos. In 1813 the Battalion again advanced into Spain against Marshal Soult under Wellington, taking part in the Battle of Vitoria as he drove the French across their frontier. By 1814 the unit, now eight battalions strong, had crossed the Pyrenees and had reached Toulouse when Napoleon abdicated. The book concludes with the creation of the King's Royal Rifle Corps. With six appendices, 8 illustrations, and 12 maps.

Although Lancaster was the ancient County town, it had a population of only 40,000 in 1914. Of these, it is thought that some 5,000 men saw war service between 1914-18, and over 1,000 did not return. In consequence, the recruiting drives, the tribunals to consider exemption from 1916, and the ever-growing casualty lists provide the main theme for this book. Some 3,000 men had volunteered by December 1914, to join those already serving. While the depot of the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment was in the town, about eighty regiments had Lancaster men in their ranks, and both the casualty lists and the awards for gallantry reflect this. The town was out of range for shelling from the sea, or aerial bombardment, but did experience an explosion at its munitions factory in 1917. Apart from this, the mayor and council endeavoured to continue with their primary duties as far as possible in running the town.

What was it really like for the soldiers of 2 New Zealand Division in World War Two? How did they spend their time and how did they see their lives as servicemen, from training at home and sailing off to war, to setting up camp, relaxing off -duty, fighting in hostile environments and possibly being taken prisoner? This anthology is a personal selection of material describing the experiences of these men, almost all written from within its ranks. Colloquially known to its members as ‘The Div’, it was by far the major part of New Zealand’s Second Expeditionary Force, making it our main contribution to the war. Naturally it had a distinctly New Zealand character, and despite being caught in several difficult situations in its early years – and not necessarily of its own doing – it gained an international reputation for courage, reliability and achievement. In this book John Gordon presents a lively and illuminating selection of the published words of members of ‘The Div’ or those with close associations. The chosen extracts are drawn from memoirs, fiction, verse, news reports and magazine articles penned by soldiers of all ranks. The result is a compilation of the written views and experiences of over 80 insiders, creating an intimate glimpse of life and war within ‘The Div’, supported by a host of photographs and cartoons from the period. From the declaration of war to the return home, this is a sample of the experiences of well over 100,000 New Zealand men who served in the division: how they coped with discipline and disaster, sacrifice and success. They write with the same frankness, humour, wry cynicism and understatement that they used to cope with the challenges of their war.

From master storyteller Stephen King comes his classic #1 New York Times bestseller about four friends who encounter evil in the Maine woods. Twenty-five years ago, in their haunted hometown of Derry, Maine, four boys bravely stood together and saved a mentally challenged child from vicious local bullies. It was something that fundamentally changed them, in ways they could never begin to understand. These lifelong friends—now with separate lives and separate problems—make it a point to reunite every year for a hunting trip deep in the snowy Maine woods. This time, though, chaos erupts when a stranger suddenly stumbles into their camp, freezing, deliriously mumbling about lights in the sky. And all too quickly, the four companions are plunged into a horrifying struggle for survival with an otherworldly threat and the forces that oppose it...where their only chance of survival is locked into their shared past—and the extraordinary element that bonds them all...
