This autoethnography describes the daily life of a school principal leading for social justice. Through my analysis of the last 12 years of practice, I depict the challenges and obstacles I have faced and reflect on the lessons I have learned. I chose three different narratives in order to demonstrate the diversity in the personal demands a principal experiences in social justice leadership. One chapter discusses comprehensive school reform. This chapter provides the most thorough look at the pragmatics of social justice leadership. Another chapter focuses on parent stories that give insight into the wide spectrum of any given community of learners. Finally, a third chapter reflects on one student's struggles. Told in real time, David's story is written as it happened with the hope that the reader can imagine the amount of emotion and time one student required. These stories give breadth and depth to our understanding of the personal nature of social justice leadership. Researching, reflecting, and writing has provided me with charged moments of clarity about my work. Through this process I have discovered my own theories of how to lead for social justice. With the hope of contributing to our knowledge of the experience of social justice leadership, I have aimed to provide a holistic and complex narrative which may inform other leaders in their social justice work.
