Lumpy Water Math was written to help wastewater treatment plant operators and collection system operators with the basic problem solving ability needed to evaluate and control these systems. This understanding will help the operator use math in day-to day operation as well as help prepare for certification exams. The math will be helpful to water supply and distribution system operators as the math used is basically the same. The instruction begins with basic instruction in solving for areas and volumes, detention time, flow calculations, hydraulic and organic loading and progresses to specialty areas such as activated sludge and laboratory calculations. The book includes tips for making problem solving and use of calculators easier. Typical state design standards are listed so that problem answers can be compared to accepted values. The book includes many practice problems with answers given in the appendix to help operators become proficient in basic problem solving.

With many worked examples, this book provides step-by-step instruction for all calculations required for wastewater treatment. Pertinent calculations are conveniently summarized in each chapter. The text covers all the fundamental math concepts and skills needed for daily wastewater treatment plant operations. The workbook for this book can be purchased separately or together in the Applied Math for Wastewater Plant Operators Set (ISBN: 9781566769891).

Understandable Step-by-Step Wastewater Math Wastewater treatment plant operators use mathematics to make key process decisions. It is important for the operator to have an understanding of math fundamentals along with the technical concepts of wastewater treatment plant operation. By reviewing the math principles presented in this text and linking these principles to wastewater treatment processes, the operator can better understand and solve math related problems. This Handbook describes the typical wastewater treatment plant processes encountered by today's operator and shows how to solve process related math problems. The Math Handbook for Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators is also a valuable resource in preparing the operator for math problems given on licensing examinations for wastewater treatment systems. Typical exam problems are solved in an easy to understand, step-by-step format.

With many worked examples, this book provides a step-by-step training manual for water treatment calculations. It presents all the fundamental math concepts and skills needed for daily water treatment plant operations. The text covers volume, flow and velocity, milligrams per liter to pounds per day, loading rate, detention and retention times, efficiency pumping, water sources and storage, coagulation and flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, chlorination, fluoridation, and softening. The workbook for this book can be purchased separately or together in the Applied Math for Water Plant Operators Set (ISBN: 9781566769884).

The second volume in this series provides step-by-step instruction in all the calculations required for wastewater treatment. Many worked examples are provided, and the pertinent calculations are conveniently summarized in each chapter. Includes a 520 page workbook.

FROM THE PREFACE In the years since the first edition, I have continued to consider ways in which the texts could be improved. In this regard, I researched several topics including how people learn (learning styles, etc.), how the brain functions in storing and retrieving information, and the fundamentals of memory systems. Many of the changes incorporated in this second edition are a result of this research. The changes were field-tested during a three-year period in which I taught a water and wastewater mathematics course for Palomar Community College, San Marcos, California. All the fundamental math concepts and skills needed for daily water/wastewater treatment plant operations. This first volume, ""Basic Math Concepts for Water and Wastewater Plant Operators,"" provides a thorough review of the necessary mathematical concepts and skills encountered in the daily operations of a water and wastewater treatment plant. Each chapter begins with a skills check to allow the student to determine whether or not a review of the topic is needed. Practice problems illustrate the concepts presented in each section.

A comprehensive, self-contained mathematics reference, The Mathematics Manual for Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators will be useful to operators of all levels of expertise and experience. The text is divided into three parts. Part 1 covers basic math, Part 2 covers applied math concepts, and Part 3 presents a comprehensive workbook with more than 1700 sample problems highlighting the kinds of exam questions operators can expect to see on state licensure examinations. Readers working through the book systematically will acquire a definitive understanding of and skill in performing the applied water/wastewater calculations that are essential for a successful career.

 · Wastewater technologies and math presented in basic, understandable terms · Clear, full explanations of unit processes from screening to activated sludge · Math review focused on wastewater plant and licensure test calculations · Questions and quizzes designed for exam preparation · Numerous drawings and solved problems illustrating key ideas This book gives plant operators and students of wastewater a simple and math-based introduction to all major unit processes in the modern wastewater treatment plant.Written with plant personnel in mind, the book furnishes easy-to-understand explanations of each step in treating wastewater--from screening, through sedimentation and settling, to activated sludge. The work is designed for operators and managers to run plants and to advance their careers by passing state licensure exams. Sample questions and problems in the text have been selected to prepare for operator examinations. Each chapter of the book is devoted to fully clarifying a unit process, and includes sample questions and problems. The book opens with a review of math, as this is applied to wastewater calculations. Many sample problems throughout give the reader an opportunity to practice and apply math formulas in realistic wastewater situations. Step-by-step descriptions of math problems show the reader how to arrive at the correct answer. Many practical tips and sample quizzes are furnished to help operators studying on their own and in courses. Written in a readable, non-technical style, this text is designed to explain wastewater technologies using down-to-earth approaches comprehensible to students. At the same time, it provides complete definitions of the key technical terms a wastewater operator needs to know

This book is a revision of the popular study guide for water system last published in 1993. This study resource is a practical tool for treatment plant operators and distribution system personnel as they prepare for the certification exam. Actually formatting is used with the sample questions, all of which have been reviewed by ABC (Association of Board of Certification) and are based on information contained in the WSO training series Water Treatment Textbook and the Water Distributor Operation Handbook. Math formulas, conversation factors and other resource references are also included. Previous edition: 0-89867-685-1)

Formerly WEF/ABC Certification Study Guide for Wastewater Treatment Personnel, this newly revised and expanded version of the best-selling WEF/ABC publication is designed to help operators prepare more effectively for certification exams. Includes 240 questions based on validated need-to-know criteria for four skill levels (Operator Level I - IV). For each of the seven need-to-know criteria, the Guide provides: Need-to-know matrix, suggested topics for study, sample questions referenced to specific technical sources, practice with math problems in both metric and English units and feedback including detailed solutions for math problems.

This study guide is a companion to the sixth edition of Operation of Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants (Manual of Practice No. 11). These two publications serve as the principal training documents for plant managers, superintendents, and operators of municipal wastewater treatment plants as well as college students and consulting engineers. The manual and study guide can be used for training classes, studying for certification exams, and improving the quality of operations within the treatment plant or firm. As with the updated manual, this study guide reflects the state of the art in plant management and operation. The questions emphasize principles of treatment, plant management, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance. Operating a wastewater treatment facility is challenging and requires continuing education to keep up with those challenges. As such, this study guide contains challenging questions and detailed solutions. A list of symbols and acronyms, conversion factors, and a glossary are also Included in this study guide. These questions can be used to help develop advanced knowledge and ensure that wastewater treatment facilities are fulfilling their mission of environmental protection.
