Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment: Practice Exercises for the NCLEX® Examination is the only review book on the market with a focus on prioritization and management of care-just like the current NCLEX Examination itself! The workbook's unique approach establishes your foundational knowledge and then provides exercises of increasing difficulty to help you build confidence in your prioritization, delegation, and patient assignment skills. It offers unique preparation for the NCLEX Examination and effectively equips you to practice in today's fast-paced healthcare environment. UNIQUE! Emphasis on the NCLEX Management-of-Care Focus: LaCharity is the only workbook available that focuses on the NCLEX Exam's management-of-care focus No other book on the market addresses the heavy management-of-care emphasis - consisting of prioritization, delegation, and patient assignment - of the current NCLEX Examination (17-23% of the 2013 NCLEX-RN Exam). Graduating seniors report that LaCharity has been invaluable in preparing them to pass the NCLEX Exam and enter into practice. UNIQUE! Three-Part Organization: The book consists of three parts, each of which builds on the previous one: . Part 1: Introduction; Part 2: Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment in Common Health Scenarios; Part 3: Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment in Complex Health Scenarios. This organization establishes foundational knowledge and then provides exercises of increasing difficulty to help students build confidence in their prioritization, delegation, and patient assignment skills. It also helps students move from passing the NCLEX-RN Exam to "hitting the ground running" as they transition into clinical practice. Part 1: Introduction: Part 1, consisting of a chapter by delegation expert Ruth Hansten, provides guidelines for prioritization, delegation, and patient assignment decisions. The Introduction provides a concise, practical foundation on which Parts 2 and 3 build. Part 2: Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment in Common Health Scenarios: Organized by body system, the chapters in Part 2 begin to give students practice in applying the principles from Part 1 to relatively straightforward scenarios involving single patients or simple patient assignments. Straightforward NCLEX-style multiple-choice, multiple-select, ordering, and short-answer questions help students develop and build confidence in prioritization, delegation, and patient assignment skills while working within the confines of relatively simple health scenarios. Part 3: Prioritization, Delegation, and Assignment in Complex Health Scenarios: Unfolding cases in Part 3 gradually immerse students in realistically complex clinical situations involving patients with complicated health problems or challenging assignment issues. These unfolding cases build on the skills learned in Part 2 to equip students to make sound decisions in realistic, complex health scenarios involving complicated health problems and/or challenging patient assignment decisions. The "unfolding" nature of each case realistically demonstrates the progression of typical health scenarios and helps students learn to "think like nurses" by developing what Benner (2010) calls "clinical imagination." Answer Key: The in-depth Answer Key at the back of the book provides not only the correct answer but also a detailed rationale and an indication of the focus of the question, whether prioritization, delegation, supervision, or patient assignment. Detailed rationales encourage formative assessment, in which students learn as much from answering incorrectly as they do from answering correctly. Expanded content focus to include psychiatric/mental health, OB/maternity, and pediatrics along with med-surg areas New chapters on infection control and obstetrics

Solution Based Casework

Solution-based casework is an approach to assessment, case planning, and case management that combines what we know from clinical social work with what we value about sound social work practice. It is grounded in family-centered social work and draws from clinical approaches within social work and mental health. By integrating problem- and solution-focused approaches that form the clinical and social work traditions, treatment partnerships are more easily formed between family, caseworker, and service provider. Solution-Based Casework is a skill-based, practice-oriented text that provides the specific guidance that students and new practitioners need in order to make sense quickly of the complex tasks of assessment and case planning in child welfare. The book flows out of a long practice experience, and was developed in consultation with workers and supervisors who were attempting to remedy problems viewed as contributing to recurrent abuse and neglect. It seeks to end adversarial relationships in casework and advocates case plans based on specific outcome skills rather than on those written with vague outcome goals measuring attendance in counseling. It serves as a common conceptual framework for integrating disparate segments of a response network, thereby allowing all providers in a therapeutic system to work toward common goals. The text is divided into three sections. In Section I the conceptual history and theoretical foundations of solution-based casework are presented so that the reader can place this approach to casework within the ongoing professional conversation about what constitutes sound practice. Section II addresses issues of assessment and case planning. Section III focuses on case management issues and how treatment team members experience a solution-based casework approach.

Mary Lawson's debut novel is a shimmering tale of love, death and redemption set in a rural northern community where time has stood still. Tragic, funny and unforgettable, this deceptively simple masterpiece about the perils of hero worship leapt to the top of the bestseller lists only days after being released in Canada and earned glowing reviews in The New York Times and The Globe and Mail, to name a few. It will be published in more than a dozen countries worldwide, including the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Italy and Bulgaria. Luke, Matt, Kate and Bo Morrison are born in an Ontario farming community of only a few families, so isolated that “the road led only south.” There is little work, marriage choices are few, and the winter cold seeps into the bones of all who dare to live there. In the Morrisons’ hard-working, Presbyterian house, the Eleventh Commandment is “Thou Shalt Not Emote.” But as descendants of a great-grandmother who “fixed a book rest to her spinning wheel so that she could read while she was spinning,” the Morrison children have some hope of getting off the land through the blessings of education. Luke, the eldest, is accepted at teachers college – despite having struggle mightily through school – but before he can enroll, the Morrison parents are killed in a collision with a logging truck. He gives up his place to stay home and raise his younger sisters -- seven-year-old Kate, and Bo, still a baby. In this family bound together by loss, the closest relationship is that between Kate and her older brother Matt, who love to wander off to the ponds together and lie on the bank, noses to the water. Matt teaches his little sister to watch “damselflies performing their delicate iridescent dances,” to understand how water beetles “carry down an air bubble with them when they submerge.” The life in the pond is one that seems to go on forever, in contrast to the abbreviated lives of the Morrison parents. Matt becomes Kate’s hero and her guide, as his passionate interest in the natural world sparks an equal passion in Kate. Matt, a true scholar, is expected to fulfill the family dream by becoming the first Morrison to earn a university degree. But a dramatic event changes his course, and he ends up a farmer; so it is Kate who eventually earns the doctorate and university teaching position. She is never able to reconcile her success with what she considers the tragedy of Matt’s failure, and she feels a terrible guilt over the sacrifices made for her. Now a successful biologist in her twenties, she nervously returns home with her partner, a microbiologist from an academic family, to celebrate Matt’s son’s birthday. Amid the clash of cultures, Kate takes us in and out of her troubled childhood memories. Accustomed to dissecting organisms under a microscope, she must now analyze her own emotional life. She is still in turmoil over the events of one fateful year when the tragedy of another local family spilled over into her own. There are things she cannot understand or forgive. In this universal drama of family love and misunderstandings, Lawson ratchets up the tension, her narrative flowing with consummate control in ever-increasing circles, overturning one’s expectations to the end. Compared by Publishers Weekly to Richard Ford for her lyrical, evocative writing, Lawson combines deeply drawn characters, beautiful writing and a powerful description of the land. From the Hardcover edition.
