The development of recombinant DNA techniques over the last 20 years has greatly expanded the opportunities for using microorganisms to produce a broad range of valuable substances. In Microbial Processes and Products, outstanding leaders in using microorganisms as cell factories describe in detail their best laboratory procedures for many processes and products mediated by microorganisms. An overview chapter describes how to develop strain improvement programs and strategies to optimize fermentation processes. Taking advantage of the most recent developments in such processes, the authors offer step-by-step experimental methods for the optimal design of microbial metabolite production, including semisynthetic derivatives of cephalosporins, erythromycin, antitumor compounds, plasmids for gene therapy and DNA vaccination, L-lysine, vitamins B2 and B12, the sweet-tasting protein thaumatin, the carotenoids b-carotene and astaxanthin, the polysaccharide gellan, and bacteria-producing bacteria for sausage fermentation. Additionally, the use of phenylacetyl-CoA catabolon for enzymatic synthesis of penicillins, aromatic biotransformations, synthesis of new bioplastics, biosensor design, or synthesis of drug vehicles, and the development of a phosphate encoding gene as a reporter and to monitor gene expression are illustrated. The diverse chemicals and biochemicals produced can be used in human health, nutrition, and environmental protection. Additional chapters offer techniques for analysis of antimicrobial metabolites and carotenoids, volatile sulfur compounds, metabolic pathway fluxes, gene expression arrays, proteome analysis, bacterial modulation of the innate immune response, bioleaching activity, and heavy metal remediation. Finally, three overview chapters on transport of biological material, deposit of biological material for patent purposes, and protection of biotechnological inventions are shown. The protocols follow the successful Methods in Biotechnology series format, each offering step-by-step laboratory instructions, an introduction outlining the principle behind the technique, lists of the necessary equipment and reagents, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. A companion volume, Microbial Enzymes and Biotransformations, describes in detail cutting-edge techniques for the screening, evolution, production, immobilization, and use of enzymes. Wide-ranging and practical, Microbial Processes and Products offers laboratory and industrial scientists a wealth of readily reproducible techniques for the successful microbial generation of biochemical products to serve the needs of human health, nutrition, and environmental protection.

Richard Fox Chairman, Scientific Programme Committee Between 25th and 29th September, 1988, 243 people who either apply or research the use of computers in fermentation gathered together at Robinson College, Cambridge, UK. They came from 30 countries. The conference brought together two traditions. Firstly, it continued the series on Computer Applications in Fermentation Technology (ICCAFT) inaugurated by Henri Blanchere in Dijon in 1973 and carried forward in Philadelphia and Manchester. Secondly, it brought the expertise of the many members of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), who focused their attention on biotechnology at Noordwijkerhout in the Netherlands in December, 1985. I am happy to say that the tradition carries on and a successor meeting will hopefully take place in the USA in 1991. If you find these proceedings useful or stimulating, then we hope to see you there. We set out to make ICCAFT4 a close-knit friendly conference. We housed all who cared to in Robinson College itself and organised no parallel sessions. Because we, the organisers, experience difficulty with the jargon of our colleagues from other disciplines, we asked Bruce Beck to present a breakfast tutorial on modern control and modelling techniques, and we set up informal panel discussions after dinner on two evenings. Neville Fish chaired a forum on the microbiological principles behind models, while Professors Derek Linkens and Ron Leigh led a discussion on expert systems in control.

A hands-on book which begins by setting the context;- defining 'fermentation' and the possible uses of fermenters, and setting the scope for the book. It then proceeds in a methodical manner to cover the equipment for research scale fermentation labs, the different types of fermenters available, their uses and modes of operation. Once the lab is equipped, the issues of fermentation media, preservation strains and strain improvement strategies are documented, along with the use of mathematical modelling as a method for prediction and control. Broader questions such as scale-up and scale down, process monitoring and data logging and acquisition are discussed before separate chapters on animal cell culture systems and plant cell culture systems. The final chapter documents the way forward for fermenters and how they can be used for non-manufacturing purposes. A glossary of terms at the back of the book (along with a subject index) will prove invaluable for quick reference.Edited by academic consultants who have years of experience in fermentation technology, each chapter is authored by experts from both industry and academia. Industry authors come from GSK (UK), DSM (Netherlands), Eli Lilly (USA) and Broadley James (UK-USA).

The rapidly expanding molecular biological techniques and approaches have significant impact on microbial biotechnology, hence the need for the addition of four new chapters in the third edition of this textbook — “Chapter 3: Application of ‘Omics’ Technologies in Microbial Fermentation”, “Chapter 5: Microbial Genome Mining for Identifying Antimicrobial Targets”, “Chapter 21: Bacterial Biofilm: Molecular Characterization and Impacts on Water Management” and “Chapter 23: Microbial Biomining”. “Chapter 15: Transgenic Plants” has been completely revised while most of the other chapters have been thoroughly updated in this new edition. There already exist a number of excellent general textbooks on microbiology and biotechnology that deal with the basic principles of microbial biotechnology. To complement them, this book focuses on the various applications of microbial-biotechnological principles. A teaching-based format is adopted, whereby working problems, as well as answers to frequently asked questions, supplement the main text. The book also includes real life examples of how the application of microbial-biotechnological principles has achieved breakthroughs in both research and industrial production. Although written for polytechnic students and undergraduates, the book contains sufficient information to be used as a reference for postgraduate students and lecturers. It may also serve as a resource book for corporate planners, managers and applied research personnel.
