The World Wide Web is now deeply intertwined with our lives, and has become a catalyst for a data deluge, making vast amounts of data available online, at a click of a button. With Web 2.0, users are no longer passive consumers, but active publishers and curators of data. Hence, from science to food manufacturing, from data journalism to personal well-being, from social media to art, there is a strong interest in provenance, a description of what influenced an artifact, a data set, a document, a blog, or any resource on the Web and beyond. Provenance is a crucial piece of information that can help a consumer make a judgment as to whether something can be trusted. Provenance is no longer seen as a curiosity in art circles, but it is regarded as pragmatically, ethically, and methodologically crucial for our day-to-day data manipulation and curation activities on the Web. Following the recent publication of the PROV standard for provenance on the Web, which the two authors actively help shape in the Provenance Working Group at the World Wide Web Consortium, this Synthesis lecture is a hands-on introduction to PROV aimed at Web and linked data professionals. By means of recipes, illustrations, a website at, and tools, it guides practitioners through a variety of issues related to provenance: how to generate provenance, publish it on the Web, make it discoverable, and how to utilize it. Equipped with this knowledge, practictioners will be in a position to develop novel applications that can bring open-ness, trust, and accountability. Though born into a fiercely traditional wine-growing family in the Bordeaux region of France, the author learned the meaning of independence at a tender age. Her mother, rebelling against the rigors of provincial life, left for Paris in search of a new career - and a divorce. Ilian's grandparents, not knowing quite what to do, placed her in a nearby convent. The nuns were kind, but as there were no other children her age, Ilian, then 4, spent her days playing by herself in the convent courtyard. Then life changed dramatically, when her mother re-married. Ilian's new step-father, a brilliant Hungarian-born intellectual, was to have a profound effect on her life. Together with her siblings, she began to experience the life of affluent Parisian society. Her parents were very much a part of the intellectual life of Montparnasse, while simultaneously creating a publishing empire. Unusual for those days, Ilian was sent for an interlude of schooling in England. Back in Paris, this protected teen-ager had only a brief time, however, before the war clouds began gathering over Europe. When the German invasion of France finally came, Ilian's step-father, Paul, having published derogatory material about the Nazi leadership, was high on the Gestapo list. It became urgent for the family to escape. They joined a massive exodus, on congested roads, toward the south of France, being strafed by Italian warplanes on the way. They succeeded in escaping from France with the help of a courageous American vice-consul in Marseille. In the U.S. Paul, with renewed energy, set up an office ce in New York and wrote a regular column for The Washington Post. During their flight from France, the family had become confirmed Gaullists. This was reflected in Paul's writing - and in Ilian's decision three years later (after she had graduated from Barnard College) to join the Free French Air Force. She became a liaison officer between the French Air Force and the U.S. First Tactical Air Force, headquartered in Vittel and later in Heidelberg. Before being de-commissioned, she was assigned to the French Air Mission in Washington, where she dated an American naval officer whom she would eventually marry. In these memoirs she tells also of other suitors who came and went. But somehow, during all of these personal dramas and the upheaval of a World War, she and her contemporaries retained a quality of "innocence" which protected them throughout.

Provenance is a well understood concept in the study of ?ne art, where it refers to the documented history of an art object. Given that documented history, the objectattains anauthority that allows scholarsto understandand appreciateits importance and context relative to other works. In the absence of such history, art objects may be treated with some skepticism by those who study and view them. Over the last few years, a number of teams have been applying this concept of provenance to data and information generated within computer systems. If the provenance of data produced by computer systems can be determined as it can for some works of art, then users will be able to understand (for example) how documents were assembled, how simulation results were determined, and how ?nancial analyses were carried out. A key driver for this research has been e-Science. Reproducibility of results and documentation of method have always been important concerns in science, and today scientists of many ?elds (such as bioinformatics, medical research, chemistry, and physics) see provenanceas a mechanism that can help repeat s- enti?cexperiments,verifyresults,andreproducedataproducts.Likewise,pro- nance o?ers opportunities for the business world, since it allows for the analysis of processes that led to results, for instance to check they are well-behaved or satisfy constraints; hence, provenance o?ers the means to check compliance of processes,on the basis of their actual execution. Indeed, increasing regulation of many industries (for example, ?nancial services) means that provenance reco- ing is becoming a legal requirement.

Acquired in avarice, hidden in lies. . . What happens when a Leonardo da Vinci canvas, lost for centuries, mysteriously appears in a New York City gallery and becomes the center of controversy among New York’s elite? With echoes of "The Da Vinci Code" and "I Bought Andy Warhol", "Provenance" is an art history suspense novel that follows Sam Driscoll, an art expert and advisor to the massively wealthy and powerful, as he navigates a world where huge egos clash and everyone is looking for the next big deal. His journey takes the reader behind the scenes of auction houses, elegant parties, and on a quest to the Italian countryside, doggedly pursuing the truth through the murky story of how this painting surfaced in New York City---and whether it really is a Leonardo at all. Greed, power, deceit, and crime nearly eclipse the beauty and magnitude of this rare painting. Ultimately, Sam must decide whether to stay in the game of buying and selling art for millions of dollars, or go against his clients’ wishes and fight for the integrity of this work of art, its original owners, and its fate to the end---wherever that may take him.

A tautly paced investigation of one the 20th century's most audacious art frauds, which generated hundreds of forgeries-many of them still hanging in prominent museums and private collections today Provenance is the extraordinary narrative of one of the most far-reaching and elaborate deceptions in art history. Investigative reporters Laney Salisbury and Aly Sujo brilliantly recount the tale of a great con man and unforgettable villain, John Drewe, and his sometimes unwitting accomplices. Chief among those was the struggling artist John Myatt, a vulnerable single father who was manipulated by Drewe into becoming a prolific art forger. Once Myatt had painted the pieces, the real fraud began. Drewe managed to infiltrate the archives of the upper echelons of the British art world in order to fake the provenance of Myatt's forged pieces, hoping to irrevocably legitimize the fakes while effectively rewriting art history. The story stretches from London to Paris to New York, from tony Manhattan art galleries to the esteemed Giacometti and Dubuffet associations, to the archives at the Tate Gallery. This enormous swindle resulted in the introduction of at least two hundred forged paintings, some of them breathtakingly good and most of them selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Many of these fakes are still out in the world, considered genuine and hung prominently in private houses, large galleries, and prestigious museums. And the sacred archives, undermined by John Drewe, remain tainted to this day. Provenance reads like a well-plotted thriller, filled with unforgettable characters and told at a breakneck pace. But this is most certainly not fiction; Provenance is the meticulously researched and captivating account of one of the greatest cons in the history of art forgery.

A lute of exquisite workmanship and beauty is crafted in Italy in the dark age of the mid 15th century by a master luthier, Francesco Ippolito da Cremona the Renaissance musician fated to play it to great acclaim, the bulk of his musical legacy composed upon it. But this lute is more than mere musical instrument; it is a memorial to love lost in a brutal tragedy. By the passion invested in it by its maker, and its embodiment of the relics of tormented love, it is imbued with the power to enchant, its enchantment released by the hands of its destined player. Against the evidence of history, the lute survives to the present day and along with a rare manuscript of Francesco Ippolito lute tablature, falls into the hands of Bob Roberts, an incurably romantic middle-class professional whose escape from a deeply unromantic life is to immerse himself in the lute music of the Renaissance. The lute is an unexceptional wreck when Bob acquires it, but he commissions its restoration and gradually its provenance is unveiled, the final revelation astonishing. The lute and Ippolito’s music exert a powerful influence upon Bob’s life that hints of deep unrest and a vague connection with lives long gone, as if lute and tablature combine in a conduit through which spiritual energy moves from past to present. This is a story of music across the ages, of obsession and betrayal, of destiny and, above all, of true love.

As the Web allows information sharing, discovery, aggregation, filtering and flow in an unprecedented manner, it also becomes very difficult to identify, reliably, the original source that produced an information item on the Web. Hence, provenance, i.e., the origin or source of something, is becoming an important concern, since it offers the means to verify data products, to infer their quality, to analyse the processes that led to them, and to decide whether they can be trusted. For instance, provenance enables the reproducibility of scientific results; provenance is necessary to track attribution and credit in curated databases; and, it is essential for reasoners to make trust judgements about the information they use over the Semantic Web. Since the emerging use of provenance in niche applications is undoubtedly demonstrating benefits, this survey contends that provenance can and should reliably be tracked and exploited on the Web. The Foundations for Provenance on the Web is aimed at anyone who discovers or publishes information on the Web, and who cares about its origin and its quality.Based on an analysis of literature, this survey puts forward the Open Provenance Vision, a visionary but pragmatic, integrative conceptual framework allowing the provenance of information to be expressed, tracked, and queried seamlessly, as it crosses information systems across the Web. Some foundational work has already resulted in significant advances in semantics, data models and systems, which can underpin this vision. However, some shortcomings inevitably exist and are discussed. For this vision to succeed, it requires a multi-disciplinary approach, since it requires contributions from many computer science sub-disciplines, but also other non technical fields given the human challenge that is anticipated.

An evocative and engaging novel of love, loss and the collision of cultures. Growing up in an Italian family in 1950s Queensland, Rafaela longs to move to Melbourne and start her own life. When she finally seizes her chance, floodwaters halt her train's progress south, and a beautiful young Sikh scientist named Chanchal captures her heart. While both their families search for their wayward children, Rafi and Chanchal forge ahead with their life together, living briefly in isolation and bliss on a farm, unaware that their story is travelling . . . Set against the stifling heat of the Queensland canefields, the lush farmland of northern New South Wales and the bustle of Melbourne in the early 1960s, Chanchal's and Rafi's stories unfold and intersect over the following years, as their chance encounter becomes a story of two countries on the cusp of modernity. Provenance is an accomplished and original novel that explores colour and cultural difference at a moment in India and Australia's post-Independence and post-war history when the West was keen, as one character puts it, to get on with the sexy part of the twentieth century.

William Tait is one of the most distinguished philosophers of mathematics of the last fifty years. This volume collects his most important published philosophical papers from the 1980's to the present. The articles cover a wide range of issues in the foundations and philosophy of mathematics, including some on historical figures ranging from Plato to Gödel. Tait's main contributions were initially in proof theory and constructive mathematics, later moving on to more philosophical subjects including finitism and skepticism about mathematics. This collection, presented as a whole, reveals the underlying unity of Tait's work. The volume includes an introduction in which Tait reflects more generally on the evolution of his point of view, as well as an appendix and added endnotes in which he gives some interesting background to the original essays. This is an important collection of the work of one of the most eminent philosophers of mathematics in this generation.
