Black Male Violence in Perspective: Towards Afrocentric Intervention represents a synthesis of lived experience, authoritative research, and Afro-centric perspective on one of the most controversial topics of our day. It examines violence by and among Black men, as it is inextricably tied to its context; the history of violence in America including colonialism, expansionism, and concepts of manifest destiny. Acknowledging important concepts like Michelle Alexander’s “The New Jim Crow” and Joy DeGruy-Leary’s “Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome,” and chronicling the devastating and injurious effects of racism, the text moves in a clinical direction. It identifies and addresses the resulting dangerous triad of frustration, anger, and depression and how they come together clinically to impact young Black men resulting in violent outcomes. It explores the psychology underlying violent behavior, delving into the socioeconomic realities that are very much a part of the landscape of violence in America. Tony Jackson utilizes cases from his career as a therapist as well as examples from actual life experience to illustrate challenging concepts. More importantly, Black Male Violence in Perspective proposes a theory of intervention and treatment with a discussion on quantitative and qualitative research methods.

On the evening of November 4, 2008, as news of Barack Obama's presidential victory spread, television footage depicted the emotional reactions of people across the country and the globe. As Obama gave his acceptance speech in Grant Park that night, the camera focused on those in the audience who were overjoyed, tears streaming down their faces. People cheered. Spontaneous and joyful celebrations broke out in the streets. Change had finally come. Analysts describe Barack Obama's success as "unheard of"--a meteoric rise--leaving many in the elite political circles astonished at what he had accomplished in his campaign. With his success, many questions arose: How was a junior senator from Chicago able to do this? Why does he evoke such strong reactions? What cultural shifts took place in American society for this to happen? Do we now live in a post-racial society, and what will this mean for the next generation? In Obama on Our Minds, Lori A. Barker leads a team of expert multicultural theorists and researchers studying racism, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, and immigration to answer these questions and analyze the enormous impact of this groundbreaking event in our nation's history.

The Brother Code: What is the role of manhood and masculinity in the lives of African American males in college? How do manhood norms influence decisions within and beyond college? How might mothers and fathers differentially affect manhood and masculinity in their sons? What are African American’s men unique ways of knowing themselves and their surroundings? The Brother Code: Manhood and Masculinity among African American Men in College situates itself at the intersection of higher education and cultural studies to address these questions and more. Primarily, this book offers colleges and universities a penetrative gaze into a complex web of identities—the manhood of African American males in college. Yet the book also seizes a rare opportunity in higher education research to review six historical eras of African American manhood as well as the troublesome relationship between African American males and education in general. This knowledge is important for understanding all aspects of African American male participation in college, including enrollment, retention, curricular, and cocurricular involvement. Based on an empirical study, the data in this book emerged from oneonone interviews in which 24 African American males enrolled in 12 colleges discussed how manhood matters in their social and college lives. The aim is to help unearth the marginalized topics of manhood, gender, and masculinity in males generally but, more specifically among African American males, a marginalized student group in education. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the book draws upon literature in history, African American studies, gender studies, sociology, cultural studies, psychology, and anthropology.
