In Medicalizing Ethnicity, Vilma Santiago-Irizarry shows how commendable intentions can produce unintended consequences. Santiago-Irizarry conducted ethnographic fieldwork in three bilingual, bicultural psychiatric programs for Latino patients at public mental health facilities in New York City. The introduction of "cultural sensitivity" in mental health clinics, she concludes, led doctors to construct essentialized, composite versions of Latino ethnicity in their drive to treat mental illness with sensitivity. The author demonstrates that stressing Latino differences when dealing with patients resulted not in empowerment, as intended, but in the reassertion of Anglo-American standards of behavior in the guise of psychiatric categories by which Latino culture was negatively defined. For instance, doctors routinely translated their patients' beliefs in the Latino religious traditions of espiritismo and Santeria into psychiatric terms, thus treating these beliefs as pathologies.Interpreting mental health care through the framework of culture and politics has potent effects on the understanding of "normality" toward which such care aspires. At the core of Medicalizing Ethnicity is the very definition of multiculturalism used by a variety of institutional settings in an attempt to mandate equality."

After the corpse of George Hawken had been found on the rocks near his Cornish home the coroner's jury brought in an open verdict. Hawken had been a respected but financially unsuccessful artist whose death benefited no one except one of his nephews, who inherited a modest cottage. Yet that nephew had mysteriously disappeared. There was no doubt about the death of Hawken's brother, Sir Matthew, which followed not long afterwards: five grains of potassium cyanide had killed him instantly. Inspector Arnold and his friend Desmond Merrion were faced with a paradox: those who had had an opportunity to commit both crimes had no motive; no one with a motive had had the opportunity.

Preservation and Purpose is already endorsed by nationally renowned political pundits, candidates, best-selling authors and journalists, including Lt. Col. Allen B. West, Monica Crowley, Dr. Alveda C. King and Michelle Malkin. In this, the first of many books to come, Demetrius Minor lends a strong and independent voice to his Millennial Generation, as a self-imposed catalyst, poised to help steer America back toward a path where traditional values play an increasingly important role for future generations. Using his own dynamic personal history as an example, Minor introduces the making of a young millennial and proves the person, not the circumstance, paves the way for individual preservation. An impassioned manifesto follows, and dives into the sensitive but crucial issues of faith, family and politics, laying the foundation for individual purpose—the greater good.
