Many language books are boring—this one is not. Written by a native English speaker who learned Spanish the hard way—by trying to talk to Spanish-speaking people—it offers English speakers who have a basic knowledge of Spanish hundreds of tips for using the language more fluently and colloquially, with fewer obvious "gringo" errors. Writing with humor, common sense, and a minimum of jargon, Joseph J. Keenan covers everything from pronunciation, verb usage, and common grammatical mistakes to the subtleties of addressing other people, "trickster" words that look alike in both languages, inadvertent obscenities, and intentional swearing. He guides readers through the set phrases and idiomatic expressions that pepper the native speaker's conversation and provides a valuable introduction to the most widely used Spanish slang. With this book, both students in school and adult learners who never want to see another classroom can rapidly improve their speaking ability. Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish will be an essential aid in passing the supreme language test—communicating fluently with native speakers.

How the 'hot springs' of the oceanic ridges cycle chemical elements between seawater and oceanic crust is then explored. As a high school history teacher for the past 25 years, I have collected and read hundreds of books pertaining to my subjects taught. On the completion of each book, I would carefully take notes on the most interesting events, quotes, or interpretations that I felt would enhance instruction for my students. After filling numerous notepads of information on over 800 books, I contemplated a project of sharing my most interesting findings. The result of this twenty plus year project is this book. This book is divided into 16 chapters based on the various topics presented. Some chapters contain a small amount of entries such as Nicknames, Espionage, or Labor while chapters on the Presidents or quotes will fill over thirty pages. The first chapter puts emphasis on the role my home state of Alabama has played on the national scene. One chapter is entitled Miscellaneous – Odds and Ends due to the subject matter not fitting into any other classification.

Intoxication has long been a questionable source of creativity for vice-loving artists, from hasheesh-smoking cave painters, mushroom-munching monks illuminating Medieval manuscripts with their hallucinatory visions, the narcotic memoirs of William S. Burroughs, the booze-fueled work of Hemingway to the anything goes spirit of post-World War II literature and beyond when it became more unusual for an artist to declare sobriety over addiction. But it wasn't until the early 1800s that authors began to write explicitly about their illicit vices. Thomas De Quincey kicked off the new dark sub-genre of substance abuse and recovery literature with his autobiographical Confessions of an English Opium-Eater which he first published anonymously in a magazine, correctly anticipating that it would shock Victorian readers. The publicity helped: he put his name on the book version and the best-selling narcotics memoir made him famous. De Quincey's classic and five other early vice related works are collected in Substance Abuse Six Pack - Six Addiction Classics: Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Perhaps one of the most famous drug-influenced poems - if not works - in all of literature. Confessions of an English Opium-Eater by Thomas De Quincey Confessions was an immediate influence on Edgar Allan Poe, Fitz Hugh Ludlow, Charles Baudelaire and Nikolai Gogol. It was also the inspiration for Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique. Tobacco and Alcohol by John Fiske and The Opium Habit by Horace B. Day Two short non-fiction books place the vices that feature prominently in this anthology in historical context. My Lady Nicotine: A Study in Smoke by J. M. Barrie Who knew the creator of Never, Never Land had a problem with addiction? Fortunately, it was the minor vice of nicotine, which the Peter Pan playwright uses as a fascinating theme for his satirical story centering around a highly-addictive, legendary blend of tobacco, known as The Arcadia Mixture. Cigars and Tobacco by Mark Twain The coda to this collection is a short but pithy speech about smoking from the American master.

Mark Lane tried the only U.S. court case in which the jurors concluded that the CIA plotted the murder of President Kennedy, but there was always a missing piece: How did the CIA control cops and secret service agents on the ground in Dealey Plaza? How did federal authorities prevent the House Select Committee on Assassinations from discovering the truth about the complicity of the CIA? Now, New York Times best-selling author Mark Lane tells all in this explosive new book—with exclusive new interviews, sworn testimony, and meticulous new research (including interviews with Oliver Stone, Dallas Police deputy sheriffs, Robert K. Tanenbaum, and Abraham Bolden) Lane finds out first hand exactly what went on the day JFK was assassinated. Lane includes sworn statements given to the Warren Commission by a police officer who confronted a man who he thought was the assassin. The officer testified that he drew his gun and pointed it at the suspect who showed Secret Service ID. Yet, the Secret Service later reported that there were no Secret Service agents on foot in Dealey Plaza. The Last Word proves that the CIA, operating through a secret small group, prepared all credentials for Secret Service agents in Dallas for the two days that Kennedy was going to be there—conclusive evidence of the CIA’s involvement in the assassination.

The papers collected here are, with three exceptions, those presented at a conference on probability and causation held at the University of California at Irvine on July 15-19, 1985. The exceptions are that David Freedman and Abner Shimony were not able to contribute the papers that they presented to this volume, and that Clark Glymour who was not able to attend the conference did contribute a paper. We would like to thank the National Science Foundation and the School of Humanities of the University of California at Irvine for generous support. WILLIAM HARPER University of Western Ontario BRIAN SKYRMS University of California at Irvine VII INTRODUCTION TO CAUSATION, CHANCE, AND CREDENCE The search for causes is so central to science that it has sometimes been taken as the defining attribute of the scientific enterprise. Yet even after twenty-five centuries of philosophical analysis the meaning of "cause" is still a matter of controversy, among scientists as well as philosophers. Part of the problem is that the servicable concepts of causation built out of Necessity, Sufficiency, Locality, and Temporal Precedence were constructed for a deterministic world-view which has been obsolete since the advent of quantum theory. A physically credible theory of causation must be, at basis, statistical. And statistical analyses of caus ation may be of interest even when an underlying deterministic theory is assumed, as in classical statistical mechanics.
