This is the third edition of a well-established and highly successful undergraduate text. The content of the second edition has been reworked and added to wherever necessary. There are new sections on amorphous solids and liquid crystals, and completely new chapters on colloids and polymers. Using elementary mathematics and simple models, Professor Tabor leads the reader skillfully and systematically from the basic physics of interatomic and intermolecular forces, temperature, heat and thermodynamics, to a coherent understanding of the bulk properties of gases, liquids, solids, liquid crystals, colloids, and polymers. The abiding theme is that all these macroscopic material properties can be understood as the result of the competition between thermal energy and intermolecular or interatomic forces.

"The liquid state of matter is an intermediate phase between solid and gas. A liquid is a fluid. Unlike a solid, the molecules in a liquid have a much greater freedom to move. The forces that bind the molecules together in a solid are only temporary in a liquid, allowing a liquid to flow while a solid remains rigid. Like the particles of a solid, particles in a liquid are subject to intermolecular attraction; however, liquid particles have more space between them, so they are not fixed in position. The attraction between the particles in a liquid keeps the volume of the liquid constant. The movement of the particles causes the liquid to be variable in shape. Liquids will flow and fill the lowest portion of a container, taking on the shape of the container but not changing in volume. Liquid is one of the four primary states of matter, with the others being solid, gas and plasma. The limited amount of space between particles means that liquids have only very limited compressibility. This Book addresses modern problems in the fields of liquids, solutions and confined systems, critical phenomena, as well as colloidal and biological systems. The book focuses on state-of-the-art developments in contemporary physics of liquid matter structure of liquids in confined systems, phase transitions, supercritical liquids and glasses, and covers the most recent developments in the broader field of liquid state. Recent trends and progress in the field of liquid matter are explored in this volume by a wide spectrum of contributions from liquid state physicists, chemists and chemical engineers."

Can you make an ice cube disappear? Put it on a hot sidewalk. It melts into water and then vanishes! The ice cube changes from solid to liquid to gas. This Level 2 Let's-Read-and-Find-Out picture book is a fascinating exploration of the three states of matter. Now rebranded with a new cover look, this classic picture book features rich vocabulary and uses simple, fun diagrams to explain the difference between solids, liquids and gases. This book also includes a find out more section with experiments designed to encourage further exploration and introduce record keeping. Both text and artwork were vetted for accuracy by Dr. Leonard Fine, formerly of Columbia University, and Dr. Karin Block of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the City College of New York. This is a Level 2 Let's-Read-and-Find-Out, which means the book explores more challenging concepts perfect for children in the primary grades and supports the Common Core Learning Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Let's-Read-and-Find-Out is the winner of the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Science Books & Films Prize for Outstanding Science Series.

The ancient Greeks believed that all matter was composed of four elements: earth, water, air, and fire. By a remarkable coincidence (or perhaps not), today we know that there are four states of matter: solids (e.g. earth), liquids (e.g. water), gasses (e.g. air) and plasma (e.g. ionized gas produced by fire). The plasma state is beyond the scope of this book and we will only look at the first three states. Although on the microscopic level all matter is made from atoms or molecules, everyday experience tells us that the three states have very different properties. The aim of this book is to examine some of these properties and the underlying physics.
