Stability is one of the most important performances required for silver halide photographic materials. In 1935, Dr. E. 1. Birr introduced the concept of the stabilization ofphotographic emulsions for the first time by inventing a most effective stabilizer, 4-oxo-6-methyl-l,3,3a,7-tetraazaindene (TAl). Dr. Birr's monograph Stabilization ofPhotographic Silver Halide Emulsions was published in 1974,and accepted as a reliable reference book by many photographic scientists and engineers. Since then, silver halide photographic materials have been greatly improved and expanded through active and continual development of various kinds of technologies. Especially, extensive efforts have been made to develop photographic materials with high sensitivity and rapid processing, which rely upon the stability ofphotographic emulsions under various conditions. Thus, the concept and technologies of stabilization ofphotographic silver halide materials have been expanded so extensively that many photographic scientists and engineers eagerly want a reliable, new reference book on the stabilization of photographic emulsions. Dr. Gunther Fischer is one of the most experienced and eminent scientists and engineers in the field of the stabilization of photographic materials with expanded concept. He has been involved in research on the stabilization of pho tographic emulsions since 1964 when he joined the Technical Scientific Laboratory in the Research and Development Department of the Photo Film Company Agfa Wolfen formerly headed by Dr. Birr, whom he succeeded in that position. I was deeply impressed by his fruitful and elaborate achievements in these fields.

This is the first comprehensive book for all aspects of monodispersed particles, consisting of four parts: Part 1 for the fundamentals of the elementary processes; Part 2 for the preparation of monodispersed particles, including the general principles, explanations of almost all known monodispersed systems on the basis of their classification, and techniques for controlling their mean size, shape, internal structure, composition, heterojunction, surface modification, etc.; Part 3 for the analytical methods for the formation processes and the characterization of monodispersed products; Part 4 for applications of monodispersed particles to fundamental studies and practicle uses, such as photographic materials, ceramics, catalysts, magnetic recording materials, pigments, cosmetics, biological and medical devices, etc. This book not only covers the most of known uniform particles, including inorganic and polymer particles and their composites, from nanometers to a few hundreds of micrometers, but also compiles numerous references about 2000. While this book is organized from the fundamentals to the ultimate levels, the text is replete with new theories, developed for this book, and novel ideas of the author's own interpretation on the formation mechanisms throughout the whole volume. In this sense, this is a unique book, as entirely different from ordinary textbooks. Since the functions and dynamic behaviours of particles strongly depend on their size, well-defined monodispersed particles are ideal particulate materials for advanced devices as well as models for fundamental studies of colloid science. This may be the sheer reason for the persistent demands for the advent of a comprehensive book focussed on this subject.

Excerpt from The Photographic Emulsion: The Mechanism of Hypersensitization Knowledge of the mechanism of hypersensitization serves to point out the inherent limitations of the process rather than to suggest improvements in procedure. Increase in sensitivity is necessarily gained at the expense of stability; the optimum excess of silver, which may be controlled by the ammonia concentration, depends on the use to be made of the hypersensitized material. In general, the more rapid the drying the higher concentration of ammonia may be used. Addition of alcohol to the bath aids in drying; it decreases the effect of a given concentration of ammonia by decreasing the dissociation, so that it is generally better to use aqueous solutions, followed by soaking the plate in 95 per cent alcohol to accelerate drying. At tempts to improve the stability of bathed plates by adding bromide to the dye bath must necessarily do so at the expense of sensitivity, since the effects of the ammonia and the bromide are opposed to each other. As soluble bromide is shown to accumulate in hypersensitizing baths or dye baths, it is obvious that their effectiveness will rapidly fall off with use, even though the ammonia concentration remains practically the same. Combination of silver salts with ammonia is little different from the use of higher concentrations of ammonia, although it may be preferable if it desired to avoid high alkalinity; difficultl soluble silver salts, such as'the chloride or tungstate, are preferab e to silver nitrate, since the maximum silver ion concentra tion which they can produce is limited by their solubility and there is less danger of fog from use of an excess. Martin Fleischmann was truly one of the ‘fathers’ of modern electrochemistry having made major contributions to diverse topics within electrochemical science and technology. These include the theory and practice of voltammetry and in situ spectroscopic techniques, instrumentation, electrochemical phase formation, corrosion, electrochemical engineering, electrosynthesis and cold fusion. While intended to honour the memory of Martin Fleischmann, Developments in Electrochemistry is neither a biography nor a history of his contributions. Rather, the book is a series of critical reviews of topics in electrochemical science associated with Martin Fleischmann but remaining important today. The authors are all scientists with outstanding international reputations who have made their own contribution to their topic; most have also worked with Martin Fleischmann and benefitted from his guidance. Each of the 19 chapters within this volume begin with an outline of Martin Fleischmann’s contribution to the topic, followed by examples of research, established applications and prospects for future developments. The book is of interest to both students and experienced workers in universities and industry who are active in developing electrochemical science.

The Chemistry and Physics of Coatings provides an introduction to the science underpinning the paint (organic coatings) industry to graduate level chemists who may have no previous knowledge of polymer-based technologies. This book stresses important physical phenomena such as rheology, film formation, and mechanical properties, their exploitation in paint, and the economic and legislative background against which coatings technology is tested. Attention is given to the chemistry of the polymers, pigments, and solvents that compose typical coatings, and the complex 'science and art' of formulating them effectively. The book also aims to give insights into the commercial application of the chemistries described, and includes a glossary of industry and polymer-related terms. Revised and updated, this second edition has been expanded to include separate chapters on binders for high solids and solvent-free coatings, inorganic and hybrid coatings and coatings formulation. There is also a new section on coatings additives. The Chemistry and Physics of Coatings will be of particular interest to graduates of materials and polymer sciences and related areas. It will also appeal to undergraduates, lecturers and those in the paint industry. Extracts from reviews of 1st Edition "... readable and surprisingly comprehensive ... In short this is an excellent book, which I recommend without hesitation." Journal of Materials Chemistry " informative and thoroughly recommended volume." Polymer International
