Have you ever wondered about the forces behind globalization, mass customization, just in time delivery, virtual companies, and perfect information? Providing a platform to understand and navigate our rapidly advancing world, Techonomics: The Theory of Industrial Evolution explains the relationship between technology, economy, and organizations. Successful entrepreneur and prolific inventor Dr. H. Lee Martin shares a technologist’s marketplace insights gained from a 15-year journey from the garage to the public market. Martin examines four foundations of healthy organizations: energy, communication, computation, and community. He then elucidates a method of tracking market progress, based on measuring both technology performance and economic cost, which provides a tool to consistently monitor advancement of any endeavor. The book looks at three contemporary trends based on electronic advancement, network expansion, and increasing productivity that are forcefully driving organizations in the 21st century. It explains examples of successful companies utilizing emerging operational business models. Adam Smith’s laws of supply and demand are challenged daily by a world productive capacity that can overproduce manufactured goods and create infinite supplies of information. Providing examples of the value of e-commerce to business operations, Technomics delineates how to measure, compare, and maximize trends in key processes. It demonstrates how, in the dawning Virtual Age, organizations that effectively use ALL resources will continually increase productivity, and those that don’t will fall behind.

Social Responsibility

With stock market swings due to unethical behavior, fuel price escalation due to increased demand, and climate disasters due to global warming, operating in a socially responsible manner is quickly moving from the realm of a nice idea to a business imperative. Taking a continuous improvement approach to social responsibility, Social Responsibility: Failure Mode Effects and Analysis offers a process for driving actions that can be taken by those interested in the "doing of" rather than the "talking about," who are ready to move toward making positive change. Although many books cover market response and interest in this global concern, this is quite possibly the first one to focus on methods for assessing an organization’s path to social responsibility performance. Authors Holly Duckworth and Rosemond Moore move beyond talking about improving social responsibility risk to doing something about it, using a well worn tool—Failure Mode Effects and Analysis. They define social responsibility, explain the ramifications of the new ISO 26000 standards in the market place, and provide problem-solving methods that can be put to immediate use. With vast experience and solid credentials in engineering and management, Duckworth and Moore are both old school types. Their point of view is not academic, political, or theoretical, but firmly based in hands-on, action oriented shop-floor work. It may seem unusual for authors with such traditional backgrounds to be writing about a topic that, on the surface, seems untraditional. But from their experience with continuous improvement as Six Sigma Master Black Belts, they have personally witnessed the waste that can be so easily removed from the work place. This book proves that when hard-hitting experts tackle a subject perceived to be as fuzzy as social responsibility, the result is methods and strategies that work.

This text is primarily aimed at strategic management in the component supply industry, purchasing and sales staff and directors within the vehicle assembly industry throughout the world. It should also appeal to IPS and BPICS professional examinees, and undergraduate and postgraduate students in MBA and business studies, engineering and automotive engineering. Richard Lamming first developed the "lean supply" model in "The Machine That Changed the World", and this is a complete presentation of that model. The book describes the development of the international automotive components industry from 1900 to the present day and discusses shared technical change and innovation in this context. There follows a comprehensive discussion of vendor-customer relationships, and a development of the "lean supply" model within "lean production". The book then discusses strategies for the future in this industry.

"Microbial Ecology of Activated Sludge, written for both microbiologists and engineers, critically reviews our current understanding of the microbiology of activated sludge, the most commonly used process for treating both domestic and industrial wastes. The contributors are all internationally recognized as leading research workers in activated sludge microbiology, and all have made valuable contributions to our present understanding of the process. The book pays particular attention to how the application of molecular methods has changed our perceptions of the identity of the filamentous bacteria causing the operational disorders of bulking and foaming, and the bacteria responsible for nitrification and denitrification and phosphorus accumulation in nutrient removal processes. Special attention is given to how it is now becoming possible to relate the composition of the community of microbes present in activated sludge, and the in situ function of individual populations there, and how such information might be used to manage and control these systems better. Detailed descriptions of some of these molecular methods are provided to allow newcomers to this field of study an opportunity to apply them in their research. Comprehensive descriptions of organisms of interest and importance are also given, together with high quality photos of activated sludge microbes."--Publisher's description.

Steiner-Khamsi and her colleagues provide an in-depth empirical and critical examination of the practice of global educational policy. Contributors question the value of importing and exporting educational policies, analyze who benefits from these arrangements, and test the effectiveness of adapting one country’s policies in other (often quite culturally distinct) countries. “An important contribution to comparative studies of education and educational politics.” —From the Foreword by Thomas S. Popkewitz “Steiner-Khamsi has established one of the major centers where cutting-edge work is being done on educational borrowing and lending. This book provides the richest textual evidence of this work in the context of globalization, and I give it my strongest endorsement.” —Val Rust, UCLA “An illuminating study that provides innovative theoretical insights on the impact of globalization in education.” —Nelly Stromquist, University of Southern California Contributors: Charles Tilly, Jürgen Schriewer, Carlos Martinez, David Phillips, Iveta Silova, Tali Yariv-Mashal, Carol Anne Spreen, Bernhard T. Biomimetic Research for Architecture and Building Construction

Biomimetic Research for Architecture and Building Construction Author Jan Knippers

This book comprises a first survey of the Collaborative Research Center SFB-TRR 141 ‘Biological Design and Integrative Structures – Analysis, Simulation and Implementation in Architecture’, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft since October 2014. The SFB-TRR 141 provides a collaborative framework for architects and engineers from the University of Stuttgart, biologists and physicists from the University of Freiburg and geoscientists and evolutionary biologists from the University of Tübingen. The programm is conceptualized as a dialogue between the disciplines and is based on the belief that that biomimetic research has the potential to lead everyone involved to new findings far beyond his individual reach. During the last few decades, computational methods have been introduced into all fields of science and technology. In architecture, they enable the geometric differentiation of building components and allow the fabrication of porous or fibre-based materials with locally adjusted physical and chemical properties. Recent developments in simulation technologies focus on multi-scale models and the interplay of mechanical phenomena at various hierarchical levels. In the natural sciences, a multitude of quantitative methods covering diverse hierarchical levels have been introduced. These advances in computational methods have opened a new era in biomimetics: local differentiation at various scales, the main feature of natural constructions, can for the first time not only be analysed, but to a certain extent also be transferred to building construction. Computational methodologies enable the direct exchange of information between fields of science that, until now, have been widely separated. As a result they lead to a new approach to biomimetic research, which, hopefully, contributes to a more sustainable development in architecture and building construction.
