A tribute to the finest writers on the game of cricket and an acknowledgement that the great days of cricket literature are behind us. There was a time when major English writers – P. G. Wodehouse, Arthur Conan Doyle, Alec Waugh – took time off to write about cricket, whereas the cricket book market today is dominated by ghosted autobiographies and statistical compendiums. The Picador Book of Cricket celebrates the best writing on the game and includes many pieces that have been out of print, or difficult to get hold of, for years. Including Neville Cardus, C. L. R. James, John Arlott, V. S. Naipaul, and C. B. Fry, this anthology is a must for any cricket follower or anyone interested in sports writing elevated to high art.

In his important contribution to the growing field of sports literature, Anthony Bateman traces the relationship between literary representations of cricket and Anglo-British national identity from 1850 to the mid 1980s. Examining newspaper accounts, instructional books, fiction, poetry, and the work of editors, anthologists, and historians, Bateman elaborates the ways in which a long tradition of literary discourse produced cricket's cultural status and meaning. His critique of writing about cricket leads to the rediscovery of little-known texts and the reinterpretation of well-known works by authors as diverse as Neville Cardus, James Joyce, the Great War poets, and C.L.R. James. Beginning with mid-eighteenth century accounts of cricket that provide essential background, Bateman examines the literary evolution of cricket writing against the backdrop of key historical moments such as the Great War, the 1926 General Strike, and the rise of Communism. Several case studies show that cricket simultaneously asserted English ideals and created anxiety about imperialism, while cricket's distinctively colonial aesthetic is highlighted through Bateman's examination of the discourse surrounding colonial cricket tours and cricketers like Prince Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji of India and Sir Learie Constantine of Trinidad. Featuring an extensive bibliography, Bateman's book shows that, while the discourse surrounding cricket was key to its status as a symbol of nation and empire, the embodied practice of the sport served to destabilise its established cultural meaning in the colonial and postcolonial contexts.

When travelling cook Jenny Starling is asked to cater the tea for a village cricket match, the last thing she expects is to be faced with the murder of one of the players. Tristan Jones was a bit of a ladies’ man, but the slick city financier had lost a lot of people’s savings and investments, so it is safe to say the list of suspects is a long one, and the local police find themselves operating on a sticky wicket. But when another body is found, it looks as though even the canny cook might be caught out for a duck. Fielding clues and red herrings isn’t easy, especially when suspect statements seem to stump everyone else involved with the investigation. Jenny must handle her next strokes very carefully but with the field around her becoming smaller it is only a matter of time before she is caught out. With an angry teenager, a cuckolded cricket captain, and even the victim’s own stepmother on the suspect list, it takes some fast deliveries by the amateur sleuth to crack the case and find the killer. One thing is for certain, though, killing two people in such an unsportsmanlike manner is just not cricket.

Cricket and the Victorians fills a gap in the literature on the social history of England during the nineteenth century. It is based on the premise that the Victorians and Victorianism cannot be properly understood unless their approaches to leisure, sport and recreation are carefully examined. In accounting for cricket's emergence at that time as England's national game, this book examines its relationship to the Victorian mores and ethos and stresses the influence of the religious and academic institutions in promoting it to a position of prominence. Based mainly on extensive research in secondary and periodical materials, the study tries also to explain how and why the cult of cricket spread so rapidly to so many parts of the empire. Cricket in nineteenth-century England became a useful tool used by the political and cultural élite as an instrument of socialisation especially during an important age of transition when society was attempting to adapt to the processes of industrialisation and urbanisation. Aimed as much at a general readership as at undergraduates with a special interest in sports history, it throws much new light on Victorian amateurs, professionals, crowds and evolving cricket techniques.
