If every American flower grower wrote a book like Deadhead, you’d have a complete, inside view of flower farming. Deadhead’s contents, one slice of that view, will assist both those interested in flower farming and those already in the business—no matter if they live in cold areas like short-summer Idaho or in warm southern climes. Several years ago an employee made shirts for Bindweed Farm that read “The Bindweed Way: 9104 experiments, 0 mistakes”, referring to Bindweed’s philosophy of shrugging off errors and turning them into sources of success. We move fast on Bindweed Farm so mistakes happen, sometimes with surprising results—often the wrong way of doing something works out better. We’ve learned a lot from our experiments, and we hope those shared in this book inspire you to make some of your own, so you can be deadheading home from your sales route with an empty truck, full of satisfaction. We initiated research studies on the postharvest physiology of cut flowers almost 20 years ago, when the floriculture industry in Poland began to grow. At that time, like most flower growers in our country, we discovered cut flowers preserve their good appearance longer if kept in a vase with water rather than in dry storage. We then began intensive reading of various horticultural and other specialty journals, and we learned that many scientists had made the same dis covery long before and had gone even further, showing that sucrose and certain chemicals added to the vase water prolong the vase life of flowers much better than water alone. In the meantime, we learned that in the Netherlands, the United States, Israel, and elsewhere, great progress has been made in the postharvest treatment of flowers through the use of floral preserva tives; grading, packing, and transportation procedures; and the organization of trade. In all these countries, researchers generously offered their information to growers, wholesalers, florists, and indi vidual flower lovers eager to improve flower quality and keepability. We collected much of the practical information from various countries with the intention of using it in research projects con cerning the postharvest physiology of floricultural commodities.

Everyone longs for fragrant spring blossoms – Snapdragons, Bells of Ireland, Sweet Peas, Sweet Williams and other beauties. But few grow them successfully in their own gardens because they haven't learned the simple techniques that make it possible. Expert flower grower Lisa Mason Zeigler introduces us to the long-blooming stars of the spring garden, the hardy annuals – those flowers that thrive when they are planted during cool conditions (instead of waiting until the warmth of spring). Forget “Some Like It Hot,” she advises, and give them a cool start. Plant them in the right spot at the right time, nestle their roots deep into rich organic soil, and stand back. In no time at all, you'll have a low-maintenance, vibrant spring flower garden that keeps on blooming when other annuals are dead and gone.

This work offers a new approach to planning and planting. It shows how to throw caution to the wind and orchestrate colors, textures, scale and scent to spectacular effect from spring until autumn. The key is color: intense, strong and voluptuous - deep crimsons combined with acid green and incandescent orange, for example. Integral to Sarar Raven's vision is a feeling for dramatic scale: plants with huge presence, architectural foliage, strong, sculptural shapes. To complete the effect, she includes flowers with silken and velvety textures and describes how to flood the garden with scent. There are schemes for sunny, open beds and borders for shady areas, for damp soils and to clothe walls and fences - many of which include lots of quick-growing annuals and take only a season to achieve.
