If you want the RIGHTIE version, click on FORMATS above and select the 1985 paperback version! If you love golf, but have never played to your potential, here is a book you will quickly come to treasure. The biggest paradox in golf is that the harder you try to "hit" the ball, the worse you do so. In The Keys to the Effortless Golf Swing, Michael McTeigue offers a simple system of sequential body movements that produces a true swinging motion with every club in the bag. The result is increased distance and greater accuracy for all sizes, shapes, and ages of golfers for a minimum of investment in learning time. The clarity and simplicity of McTeigue's frill-free approach to the golf swing leads the reader to a new experience of power and effortlessness. He truly shows "how to build a swing you can trust and keep for life."Reviews:Most golf instruction books are written by famous performers about how they personally swing the club, and there's no doubt the better ones can be helpful-especially if you share the authors's athleticism, ambition, appetite for work, and opportunities for practice and play. This book was written by a very bright but at the time unfamous young teacher whose daily bread depended on delivering permanently decent-to-good golf games to averagly endowed people with no interest in becoming slaves to the sport. He became so successful at that in his immediate community that his pupils demanded he put the system on paper for their constant reference and reminder. He called the result The Keys to the Effortless Golf Swing, and sent it to a number of star players, one of whom passed it on to me. After one quick reading I believed that the book would help so many other existing and would-be golfers to such an extent that it just had to be made available nationally. Jim McQueen, one of the world's top golf artists and a former professional, fully shared those sentiments and agreed to do the illustrations, and the nation's leading golf book publisher became an enthusiastic third party. The key to Michael McTeigue's success with his thousands of pupils af all sizes, shapes, ages and ability levels in California, and the beauty of this book, is the clarity and simplicity and the supremely logical sequentiality of its approach to the golf swing. Follow the easily mastered steps or Keys in the recommended order and with a reasonable degree of patience, and in a remarkably short time, you will be experiencing entirely new sensations of both accurate striking and effortless power. Encouraged by those - and the accompanying evaporation of confusion - you will persist with these simple and clear cut moves until they become thoroughly muscle-memorized. At that point, you will be swinging the golf club effectively and with total confidence on every shot entirely by feel, which is the closest you or anyone else will ever come to golf's secret (ask any champion if you doubt that). Gone forever at long last will be the Band-Aids and the gimmicks and all that frustrating stumbling from one fruitless theory to another. If you love golf and want to play better for a lot less effort, then forget Michael McTeigue's fame quotient and work with this little gem of a book. It could make you as big a fan of his as all those happy pupils for whom he originally wrote it. --Ken Bowden. A former editorial director of Golf Digest magazine, Ken Bowden has coauthored more than a dozen golf instrunction books, seven of them with Jack Nicklaus. This is the simplest, most easily understood, best overall golf instructional presentation I have ever read. Understanding the Lighthouse Turn alone is worth the price of admission. --Tim Baldwin, Coach emeritus, Stanford University's Women's Golf TeamThe Keys to the Effortless Golf Swing is a lovely book of golf instruction, well written, sound, and mercifully free of extraneous advice. --Michael Murphy, author of Golf In the Kingdom

Most golfers never improve irrespective of what they try. You needn't be most golfers. A Golf Swing You Can Trust is an original work by John Hoskison, a deep-thinking PGA player and teacher. Inside, John reveals how, after years of slicing, he went from the worst player on tour to the National PGA Professional Champion by using these simple techniques. From the grip to the finish position, John coaches using humor and unique analogies to explain how the golf swing works, and how to build a swing you can trust. REVIEWS: "John taught himself a great technique and knows as much about the golf swing as anyone I've met." ~Nick Mitchell, Former European Tour PGA Player "I went to John for the usual stuff; head in hands, not knowing what shot was coming next. John kept it simple… got me back enjoying my golf again." ~Mick Fitzgerald, TV Sports Presenter—Former National Hunt Jockey "John has solid orthodox technique and is a great student of the game. He always told me 'simple is best'." ~Andrew Murray, European Tour—1989 European Open Champion EXCERPT FROM A Golf Swing You Can Trust: The correct stance is vital if you want to build a simple swing that repeats. But most golfers switch off and skip these chapters of a golf instruction book. I understand that. The grip and aim are not as alluring as advice on the theoretical advantages of pronation or supination through impact. And hey! You've been told you have a nice practice swing—you can't be that far off. Aiming correctly is for beginners! So just to dispel any reservations you may have that this book is not for you, here's one last piece of motivational talk before we move on to check your stance. It's very often a golfer makes a great practice swing but when they come to hit the ball the swing's completely different. That's because the hands and body don't communicate on a practice swing—they let you get on with it on your own. They only bother to 'talk' to each other when you're about to hit a shot at a specific target. When the crunch comes and you're ready to swing back, if the aim of the club doesn't match up to your intended swing path, they hit the panic button, take control and stick the swing on autopilot. They program in what they have to do and you can't override it. You might try to take the club back in one piece but it you're not aiming correctly—they quickly take over. And if you think you can kid them you'd have done it by now. If you are aiming at a target 250 yards away and your clubface is only 3 degrees to the right, it will be pointing 13 yards right of target. If you try to replicate your nice square practice swing, but your hands pick up where the club is aiming the two angles are so conflicting your orthodox swing becomes impossible. The only time you can override your natural alarm system is when you're standing in front of a pro and he's watching you like a hawk. Then the alarm system becomes dormant—it trusts the pro to watch over you. Soon as you walk out the teaching bay, it switches back on. OTHER TITLES by John Hoskison Shooting Lower Scores MEET JOHN HOSKISON John is a former European Tour member and two-time PGA Cup player v USA. He led England in the European Team Championships and was elected Surrey Professional Golf Association Captain. Most golfers have difficulty with the concept of hitting down at the ball to make it fly. Surprisingly, a great many players surveyed did not even know you need to hit down to get the ball up in the air. Hit Down Dammit! concisely explains the concept - and the technique - of hitting down at the golf ball for proper trajectory, increased backspin, much improved distance, proper divot taking, and best of all: consistent shotmaking. If you are inadvertently - or intentionally - hitting up at the ball, Hit Down Dammit! is for you. If you are a seasoned amateur who has inexplicably "plateaud" - just cannot seem to get to the next level despite lessons and/or acquiring a library of books and videos - Hit Down Dammit! is for you. Symptoms of hitting up include (but are not limited to): - topping the ball - skulling the ball - pushing the ball - slicing the ball - poor distance - difficulty getting off back foot - poor backspin - no divot - fat divots - chunking the ball - thin/fat chip shots - roofing the ball with your driver - inability to hit long irons and/or fairway woods - good shots followed immediately by poor shots Hitting down at the golf ball is not a new concept, but it is a hitherto poorly explained (or completely avoided) concept. All pros agree on the need to hit down, so there is no debate there. Even Tiger Woods, in his 306 page "How I Play Golf," states the need to hit down at the ball - but does not explain how. Hit Down Dammit! does. Learn to hit down, watch the ball go up, and your scores go down.

The legendary golf instructional, available again. This is, along with Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, THE book Golf professionals turn to. "Thirty years ago I was recommending Joe Dante's book The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf as a must read for aspiring PGA professionals. What Dante said in '62 has influenced many of the game's finest teachers. Dante was a visionary."--Gary Wiren, author of New Golf Mind When published, The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf radically changed the way many players thought about the golf swing. Dante's system showed how simple it was to improve one's game, and at the same time gave the golfer one of the most comprehensive analyses of swing mechanics ever published. Now, thirty-three years after its original publication, Main Street is proud to reissue this classic instructional. Dante begins by sweeping out all the misconceptions of the game. "If good golf is to be learned and the poor player is to improve, a purging must take place, painful as it may be." Dante discusses a few basics of grip and stance, and then he gets to the heart of his book, the four magic moves. As he reveals each of the moves, Dante focuses on the physical checkpoints so that any golfer can make sure that his or her swing is on the right track. The Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf is straightforward and easy to understand, yet unlike other golf books it is irreverent and audacious in its approach to mastering the game. The publication of this rediscovered classic is sure to establish Joe Dante's reputation as one of golf's greatest teachers. From the Trade Paperback edition.

In his landmark bestseller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant-in the blink of an eye-that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work-in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others? In Blink we meet the psychologist who has learned to predict whether a marriage will last, based on a few minutes of observing a couple; the tennis coach who knows when a player will double-fault before the racket even makes contact with the ball; the antiquities experts who recognize a fake at a glance. Here, too, are great failures of "blink": the election of Warren Harding; "New Coke"; and the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police. Blink reveals that great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of "thin-slicing"-filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables.
