Clive Staples Lewis (1898–1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, broadcaster, lecturer, and Christian apologist. He held academic positions at both Oxford University (Magdalen College, 1925–1954) and Cambridge University (Magdalene College, 1954–1963). He is best known for his works of fiction, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain. Lewis and fellow novelist J. R. R. Tolkien were close friends. They both served on the English faculty at Oxford University, and were active in the informal Oxford literary group known as the Inklings. According to Lewis's memoir Surprised by Joy, he was baptised in the Church of Ireland, but fell away from his faith during adolescence. Lewis returned to Anglicanism at the age of 32, owing to the influence of Tolkien and other friends, and he became an “ordinary layman of the Church of England.” Lewis's faith profoundly affected his work, and his wartime radio broadcasts on the subject of Christianity brought him wide acclaim. Lewis wrote more than 30 books, which have been translated into more than 30 languages and have sold millions of copies. The books that make up The Chronicles of Narnia have sold the most and have been popularised on stage, TV, radio, and cinema. His philosophical writings are widely cited by Christian apologists from many denominations. This volume collects C.S. Lewis’s classic “Space Trilogy,” consisting of Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. Sanford Schwartz offers a penetrating new reading of Lewis's celebrated Space Trilogy. Taken together, Schwartz's readings call into question Lewis's self-styled image as a "dinosaur" out of step with the main currents of modern thought. Far from a simple struggle between an old-fashioned Christian humanism and a newfangled heresy, Lewis's Space Trilogy should be seen as the searching effort of a modern religious apologist to sustain and enrich the former through critical engagement with the latter.

This collection of futuristic fiction includes a breathtaking science fiction story written early in his career in which Cambridge intellectuals witness the breach of space-time through a chronoscope—a telescope that looks not just into another world, but into another time. As powerful, inventive, and profound as his theological and philosophical works, The Dark Tower reveals another side of Lewis’s creative mind and his longtime fascination with reality and spirituality. Modeled after John Bunyan's famous Pilgrim's Progress, C. S. Lewis's Pilgrim's Regress (1933) represents a number of firsts for Lewis -- the first book he wrote after his conversion to Christianity, his first book of fiction, and the first book he published under his own name. This brand-new annotated edition helps readers recover the richness of Lewis's original allegory. Often considered obscure and difficult to read, The Pilgrim's Regress nonetheless remains a rollicking satire on modern cultural fads, a vivid account of contemporary spiritual dangers, and an illuminating tale for generations of pilgrims old and new. Editor David C. Downing relies both on his own expertise and on previously unpublished sources from Lewis himself to identify allusions to other authors, translate quotations, and explain inside jokes hidden within Lewis's text.
