This study focuses on a particular manuscript of Firdausi’s epic poem the Shahnamah produced in the late 1440s for the Timurid Muhammad Juki, seventh son of Shah Rukh. The manuscript contains thirty-one exquisite miniature paintings depicting scenes from the epic and is regarded by some as the finest surviving Persian illustrated manuscript. This monograph, the first complete study of the manuscript, provides a detailed analysis of the cycle of illustrations, and is accompanied by a commentary on the manuscript notes by A.H. Morton, which offers telling insights into the practices of the Mughal library where it was kept for many years.

The End of Innocence

The End of Innocence Author Andrée Feillard

Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world, is often cited as a model of harmony among different religions. Home to an apparently peaceful version of Islam, Indonesia occupied a special place in the Western imagination, a reassuring counter-model to a rowdy and accusatory Arab Islam. Events since 1999, including confrontations between Christians and Muslims in the Moluccas and Sulawesi, excesses of vigilantism, and bombings in Bali and Jakarta, have shattered these simplistic stereotypes. For terrorism experts, many of them self-proclaimed, Indonesia's mutation confirmed a hackneyed thesis that equated obscurantism with Islam, and saw violent outbreaks as an inevitable corollary. The End of Innocence is far removed from the hollow interpretations derived from this essentialist thesis. AndrTe Feillard and RTmy Madinier position the evolution of Indonesian Islam within the broader context of the recent history of the archipelago and develop a rigorous analysis of the origins and causes of the 'radical temptation', deciphering its ideology and showing how it has been nourished by political manipulation. Their account explains the appeal of religious extremism and also the strong resistance it provokes in a country that has quickly become a key participant in the struggle and upheavals taking place throughout the Muslim world.

Towards An Unknown Marx

Towards An Unknown Marx Author Enrique Dussel

This book is the first complete commentary on Marx's manuscripts of 1861-63, works that guide our understanding of fundamental concepts such as 'surplus-value' and 'production price'. The recent publication of Marx's writings in their entirety has been a seminal event in Marxian scholarship. The hitherto unknown second draft of Volume 1 and first draft of Volume 3 of Capital, both published in the Manuscripts of 1861-63, now provide an important intermediate link between the Grundrisse and the final published editions of Capital. In this book, Enrique Dussel, one of the most original Marxist philosophers in the world today, provides an authoritative and detailed commentary on the manuscripts of 1861-63. The main points which Dussel emphasises in this path-breaking work are: The fundamental category in Marx's theory is 'living labour' which exists outside of capital and which capital must subsume in order to produce surplus-value Theories of Surplus Value is not a historical survey of previous theories, but rather a 'critical confrontation' through which Marx developed new categories for his own theory The most important new categories developed in this manuscript are related to the 'forms of appearance' of surplus value. The final part of the book discusses the relevance of the Manuscripts of 1861-63 to contemporary global capitalism, especially to the continuing underdevelopment and extreme poverty of Latin America.

Current interest in Britain's imperial past and the loss of her formal empire since World War II is substantial. This book, the second of a two-part study, brings together a collection of original and hitherto unpublished source material, throwing light on the approaches of those politicians, civil servants and expert advisers who were responsible for Britain's changing relations with her colonies and the Commonwealth. Major themes touched on include the impact on the empire of the international upheavals of the 1950s, the place of colonies in Britain's strategic defence planning, problems of colonial economic development, and relations with the USA.

This book is an attempt to explain how, in the face of increasing religious authoritarianism in medieval Islamic civilization, some Muslim thinkers continued to pursue essentially humanistic, rational, and scientific discourses in the quest for knowledge, meaning, and values. Drawing on a wide range of Islamic writings, from love poetry to history to philosophical theology, Goodman shows that medieval Islam was open to individualism, occasional secularism, skepticism, even liberalism.

Augusto Del Noce is widely considered one of Italy’s foremost philosophers and political thinkers in the second half of the twentieth century. He is also remembered as an original and profound cultural critic, and in particular as a great scholar of the process of secularization that took place in the West during the 1960s. A collection of eleven essays and lectures by Del Noce that originally appeared between 1964 and 1969, and which the author published as a book in 1971, The Age of Secularization quickly became recognized as one of the most original and penetrating attempts to interpret the cultural and political turmoil of the period. In its pages Del Noce discusses, among other topics, the student protests of 1968, the counterculture of the 1960s, the significance of the sexual revolution, the nature of the technological society, and the relationship between Christianity and modern culture. The Age of Secularization documents the encounter between a key period of contemporary history and the full intellectual maturity of one of its most perceptive observers. It makes available to English-language readers a lasting reflection on the philosophical roots of contemporary culture, and it is just as illuminating and topical today as it was nearly fifty years ago.

In his native Italy Augusto Del Noce is regarded as one of the preeminent political thinkers and philosophers of the period after the Second World War. The Crisis of Modernity makes available for the first time in English a selection of Del Noce's essays and lectures on the cultural history of the twentieth century. Del Noce maintained that twentieth-century history must be understood specifically as a philosophical history, because Western culture was profoundly affected by the major philosophies of the previous century such as idealism, Marxism, and positivism. Such philosophies became the secular, neo-gnostic surrogate of Christianity for the European educated classes after the French Revolution, and the next century put them to the practical test, bringing to light their ultimate and necessary consequences. One of the first thinkers to recognize the failure of Marxism, Del Noce posited that this failure set the stage for a new secular, technocratic society that had taken up Marx’s historical materialism and atheism while rejecting his revolutionary doctrine. Displaying Del Noce's rare ability to reconstruct intellectual genealogies and to expose the deep metaphysical premises of social and political movements, The Crisis of Modernity presents an original reading of secularization, scientism, the sexual revolution, and the history of modern Western culture.

Philosophy in the Islamic World A Very Short Introduction

Philosophy in the Islamic World A Very Short Introduction Author Peter Adamson

In the history of philosophy, few topics are so relevant to today's cultural and political landscape as philosophy in the Islamic world. Yet, this remains one of the lesser-known philosophical traditions. In this Very Short Introduction, Peter Adamson explores the history of philosophy among Muslims, Jews, and Christians living in Islamic lands, from its historical background to thinkers in the twentieth century. Introducing the main philosophical themes of the Islamic world, Adamson integrates ideas from the Islamic and Abrahamic faiths to consider the broad philosophical questions that continue to invite debate: What is the relationship between reason and religious belief? What is the possibility of proving God's existence? What is the nature of knowledge? Drawing on the most recent research in the field, this book challenges the assumption of the cultural decline of philosophy and science in the Islamic world by demonstrating its rich heritage and overlap with other faiths and philosophies.
