The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. This book, based on papers from a symposium at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, shows the necessity of developing a new philosophy in place of the classical uniformitarianism based only on processes familiar in human experience. Originally published in 1984. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Since the l960s, archaeology has become increasingly taught in universities and practiced on a growing scale by national and local heritage agencies throughout the world. This book addresses the criticisms of postmodernist writers about archaeology's social role, and asserts its intellectual importance and achievements in discovering real facts about the human past. It looks forward to the creation of a truly global consciousness of the origins of human societies and civilizations.

The conference was held in Snowbird, Utah, October 1988, as a sequel to the Conference on Large Body Impacts held in 1981, also in Snowbird. This volume contains 58 peer-reviewed papers, arranged into sections that cover the major themes of the conference: catastrophic impacts, volcanism, and mass mortality; geological signatures of impacts; environmental effects of impacts; patterns of mass mortality; volcanism and its effects; case histories of mass mortalities; and events and extinctions at the K/T boundary. Science and Medicine in the Scottish Enlightenment

Science and Medicine in the Scottish Enlightenment Author Charles W. J. Withers

Writing to Dugald Stewart in June 1789, Thomas Jefferson enthused that as far as science was concerned, no place in the world can pretend to a competition with Edinburgh. Yet, despite similar encomiums down the years, the role of the natural sciences and medicine in the Scottish Enlightenment is still neither generally appreciated nor fully understood. This collection of ten essays by scholars in the field provides a comprehensive overview of the place of scientific and medical enquiry in Scotland during the period 1690-1815. Each chapter presents new research in order to reflect upon previous interpretations and to suggest fresh perspectives on the relationship between science and medicine and culture and society in 18th-century Scotland. Collectively, the essays illustrate both the centrality of natural and medical knowledge in enlightened culture and the wider implications of Scotland's story for an understanding of science and medicine in the modern world.

Nonabelian Multiplicative Integration on Surfaces

Nonabelian multiplicative integration on curves is a classical theory. This volume is about the 2-dimensional case, which is much more difficult. In our construction, the setup is a Lie crossed module: there is a Lie group H, together with an action on it by another Lie group G. The multiplicative integral is an element of H, and it is the limit of Riemann products. Each Riemann product involves a fractal decomposition of the surface into kites (triangles with strings connecting them to the base point). There is a twisting of the integrand, that comes from a 1-dimensional multiplicative integral along the strings, with values in the group G. The main result of this work is the 3-dimensional nonabelian Stokes theorem. This result is new; only a special case of it was predicted (without proof) in papers in mathematical physics. Our constructions and proofs are of a straightforward nature. There are plenty of illustrations to clarify the geometric constructions. Our volume touches on some of the central issues (e.g., descent for nonabelian gerbes) in an unusually down-to-earth manner, involving analysis, differential geometry, combinatorics and Lie theory — instead of the 2-categories and 2-functors that other authors prefer. Key Features:The author is an expert on algebraic geometry and deformation quantization. In this volume, he takes a journey into another area of mathematics (differential geometry), and the result of this journey is a collection of original and deep constructions and theoremsThe volume contains an unusually detailed study of the nonabelian exponential map and of piecewise smooth differential formsThe volume includes an edited version of lecture notes on the subject, that provides a quick and lucid overview of the main featuresKeywords:Multiplicative Integration;Lie Groups;Lie Crossed Modules;3-Curvature;Nonabelian Stokes Theorem
