"Everyone is waiting. We wait for a bus, a spouse, a different job, a better life. We wait for Christ. At best, it's irritating; at worst, unbearable. But what if our frustrated longings have spiritual value? Enter four Bible heroes who waited impatiently: Sarah, Isaiah, John the Baptist and Mary. Through gripping storytelling, we immerse ourselves in their lives. We find empathy for our disappointment and doubt. We find perspective and purpose in delay. Above all, we find God in the waiting. With reflective questions and six Bible studies, Those Who Wait is ideal for personal devotion or group discussion. Also suitable as an Advent devotional."--

Eighteen-year-old Kristy has a stalker who sits three pews behind her every Sunday morning She expects her beloved church family to rally around her, but her fundamentalist church council is dismissive. As her stalker's erratic behavior escalates toward a promised Old Testament-style execution, and church members continue to shelter him while promoting purity culture, she must make a choice: submit to the point of being murdered or leave everything behind to build a new life-and faith-from scratch. Early Praise: "Not merely a thriller about being stalked, Act Normal raises important questions on the church, feminine sexuality - and most challengingly, how to be a peacemaker in a violent world when it comes at great cost." -Tanya Marlow, author of Those Who Wait: Finding God In Disappointment, Doubt, And Delay "It is, all at the same time, disturbing and delightful, frightening and funny, horrifying and hilarious. It is a book that unmasks the 'norms' of typical American Evangelical Christian 'churchhood, ' and calls us to be aware of the dangers which lie beneath the calm surface of our established religious routines and habits." -Kenneth N. Myers, author of Salvation (And How We Got It Wrong) and Look At Us: What Life, Love, & Loss Taught Me About Romance

Popular Southern California millennial pastor Chad Veach casts a vision for a future beyond what most dare to imagine and guides readers toward the abundant plans God has for his children. Pastor Chad Veach lives in Los Angeles, a place many have dubbed the "City of Broken Dreams." Each year, thousands of people move there, hoping to make it big, but most fall short of achieving their dreams. This is reflective of the wider world as well. In fact, only 6 percent of people actually end up doing what they dreamed of as a child. The hard truth is, dreams--whether they have to do with relationships, career, or world impact--often don't pan out. So many are left to wonder, Where do I go from here? In this new book, Veach meets readers in the middle of their disappointments, introduces them to the God who throws his arms around them, and offers a new way to define success. He takes them through the words of Jesus and helps them to understand what the Bible says about ambition, purpose, and fulfillment. Then he casts a vision that inspires readers to reach for a better dream than all the broken ones they tried to pursue on their own, challenging them to put their faith in the person of Jesus every day and follow his lead to a brighter future.

When Your Twenties Are Darker Than You Expected explores the darkest, most unmanageable emotions that your twenties grow in your gut: Depression, Suicidality, Regret, Grief, Doubt, Dissatisfaction, Anxiety, Loneliness, and Lust. You may not know any of these words intimately. If that's the case, I recommend you don't purchase this book. This is a meeting place for those who are desperate in their darkness, with the clear conviction that God and humanity have abandoned them. "Paul's writing is like Tim Ferris meets Sren Kierkegaard - the tactical colliding with the existential." -Stephen Christian, lead singer of Anberlin ""Paul Maxwell is the Kierkegaard of our generation. ... If you know what I mean when I say 'Darkness,' then you simply must buy this book." -Daniel Montgomery, Founder of Sojourn Network "This book ... is exemplary, as well as unique: raw, confessional, and devotional; something like Augustine meets Sylvia Plath." -Eric Johnson, Lawrence and Charlotte Hoover Professor of Pastoral Care, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary "Paul is one of the most intelligent people I know, fiercely honest, and genuine. That's the kind of companion and guide you need. ... His writing is studded with thoughtful allusions, poetic phrases, and images. Mine them for their riches. Meditate on them." -Winston Smith, CCEF Faculty, Episcopal Priest

The Pulpit Commentary Volume 5

The Pulpit Commentary was first published between 1880 and 1919 and is a highly respected work written by conservative, trustworthy men. Containing over 22,000 pages and 95,000 entries, it is one of the largest and best-selling homiletic commentary sets of all time. It was directed by editors Joseph Exell and Henry Donald Maurice Spence-Jones and utilized more than 100 authors over a 30-year span. When reading this commentary, it is not difficult to see why it has remained a favorite amongst pastors for more than 100 years. There are three key elements which set this apart from its contemporaries, the first being that it gives an exposition, or verse-by-verse, annotation of each verse in the Bible. The second element is that it explores the framework of the text, the homiletics. Finally, it supplies the homilies with multiple model sermons from various authors. Also included is a translation as well as historical and geographical information. The Evangelical Magazine and Missionary Chronicle declared, “This commentary bids fair to take a conspicuous place among the ever-multiplying aids to the study of the Holy Scriptures. It will revive the great work of Lange, and will far exceed the Speaker's Commentary in the bulk and fullness of its material. The peculiarity of the Pulpit Commentary is that it offers special assistance to the preacher: first by giving him a critical and exegetical exposition of the text of Scripture, and then providing him with succinct and helpful directions as to the preachable aspects of the chapter and paragraph already explained." The print edition of this set typically retails for more than $1,000 making the current offered price a very good bargain. Due to its size, it has been broken up into nine separate volumes: Volume 1 Genesis to Joshua Volume 2 Judges to 2 Kings Volume 3 1 Chronicles to Job Volume 4 Psalms to Song of Songs Volume 5 Isaiah to Daniel Volume 6 Hosea to Malachi Volume 7 Matthew to John Volume 8 Act to Philippians Volume 9 Colossians to Revelation The footnotes have been placed in line with the text with each footnote number enclosed in red brackets (i.e.: []) and the text in green. There is also a linked table of contents at the beginning of each volume for ease of navigation. Key Features * Over 22,000 pages with more than 95,000 entries * One of the largest and exhaustive commentary sets of its kind * Contributions from over 100 authors * Expositions—with thorough verse-by-verse commentary of each verse of the Bible * Homiletics—with the framework or overall look of the text * Homilies—four to six sample sermons from various authors * Detailed information on Biblical customs * Historical and geographical information * Translations of key Hebrew and Greek words All 23 Volumes of the printed version are included in these nine volumes. 1. All Things Shining

In unrelenting flow of choices confronts us at nearly every moment of our lives, and yet our culture offers us no clear way to choose. This predicament seems inevitable, but in fact it’s quite new. In medieval Europe, God’s calling was a grounding force. In ancient Greece, a whole pantheon of shining gods stood ready to draw an appropriate action out of you. Like an athlete in “the zone,” you were called to a harmonious attunement with the world, so absorbed in it that you couldn’t make a “wrong” choice. If our culture no longer takes for granted a belief in God, can we nevertheless get in touch with the Homeric moods of wonder and gratitude, and be guided by the meanings they reveal? All Things Shining says we can. Hubert Dreyfus and Sean Dorrance Kelly illuminate some of the greatest works of the West to reveal how we have lost our passionate engagement with and responsiveness to the world. Their journey takes us from the wonder and openness of Homer’s polytheism to the monotheism of Dante; from the autonomy of Kant to the multiple worlds of Melville; and, finally, to the spiritual difficulties evoked by modern authors such as David Foster Wallace and Elizabeth Gilbert. Dreyfus, a philosopher at the University of California, Berkeley, for forty years, is an original thinker who finds in the classic texts of our culture a new relevance for people’s everyday lives. His lively, thought-provoking lectures have earned him a podcast audience that often reaches the iTunesU Top 40. Kelly, chair of the philosophy department at Harvard University, is an eloquent new voice whose sensitivity to the sadness of the culture—and to what remains of the wonder and gratitude that could chase it away—captures a generation adrift. Re-envisioning modern spiritual life through their examination of literature, philosophy, and religious testimony, Dreyfus and Kelly unearth ancient sources of meaning, and teach us how to rediscover the sacred, shining things that surround us every day. This book will change the way we understand our culture, our history, our sacred practices, and ourselves. It offers a new—and very old—way to celebrate and be grateful for our existence in the modern world.

Experience the Lifelong Pleasures of Knowing God! Satisfaction…Happiness…Joy. According to John Piper, the pursuit of pleasure in God is not only permissible, it’s essential. Desiring God is a paradigm-shattering work that dramatically alters common perspectives on relating to God. Piper reveals that there really is no need to choose between duty and delight in the Christian life. In fact, for the follower of Jesus, delight is the duty as Christ is most magnified in His people when they are most satisfied in Him. Constantly drawing on Scripture to build his case, Piper shows why pursuing maximum joy is essential to glorifying God. He discusses the implications of this for conversion, worship, love, Scripture, prayer, money, marriage, missions, and suffering. Piper beckons us to approach God with the hedonist’s abandon. Finally, we are freed to enjoy Jesus—not only as our Lord and Savior, but also as our all-surpassing, soul-satisfying Treasure. Desiring God may turn your Christian world upside down. And that will be a good thing, for the glory of God, and for your deepest joy. Includes a study guide for individual and small group use.

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells, essential for the production and management of energy at the cell level. Dr. Sarah Myhill has spent years studying the relationship between mitochondrial malfunction and one of the most common problems that leads people to the doctor's office: fatigue. In Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalitis, Dr. Myhill examines this essential role of our mitochondria in energy production and why it is key to understanding and overcoming Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and the inflammation that often accompanies it: Myalgic Encephalitis (ME). She explains the importance of healthy mitochondria, how we can assess how well they are functioning, what we can do to keep them healthy, and how to restore them to health if problems arise. Since publication of the first edition in 2014, new research and new clinical findings have shed further light on a condition that is debilitating to those who suffer from it, but "all in the head" to many doctors. The second edition of this groundbreaking book includes new insights and chapters on why CFS/ME is the most poorly treated condition in Western medicine, the role of the gut, allergy and autoimmunity, Lyme disease and other coinfections, reprogramming the immune system, reprogramming the brain, and the roadmap to recovery.
