The versatility of the emulsion copolymerization reaction and the ability to control the properties of the final latices have led to rapid expansion both in the quantity of polyvinylacetate and vinyl acetate-acrylic copolymer latices and in their applications. Vinyl Acetate Emulsion Polymerization and Copolymerization with Acrylic Monomers provides a collection and logical organization of the published data - much of it formerly found fragmented throughout various journals and little of it referenced in general emulsion polymerization books. To date, no one source has offered chemists and polymer, surface, or colloid specialists the "big picture" of polyvinylacetate-based latices. Integrating established knowledge with the latest research developments, this book provides the background for understanding the mechanism and kinetics of emulsion polymerization initiated in the aqueous phase and some of the practical problems of latex production. The author presents an overview of industrial practices, new applications, and all of the fundamental material - avoiding theoretical controversies. With in-depth discussion of the ingredients found in most industrial recipes, Vinyl Acetate Emulsion Polymerization and Copolymerization with Acrylic Monomers helps eliminate costly and time-consuming "trial and error" practices. It serves not only as an introduction for those new to the field, but also as a valuable reference for researchers and applied scientists in both industry and academia.

It is particularly appropriate that this symposium on the emulsion polymeriza tion of vinyl acetate was held in recognition of the industrial importance of poly(vinyl acetate) and vinyl acetate copolymers, and their rather unique properties among emulsion polymers in general. Poly( vinyl acetate) latexes were the first synthetic polymer latexes to be made on a commercial scale: their production using polyvinyl alcohol as emulsifier began in Germany during the mid-1930s and has continued to the present day, growing steadily with the years. Indeed, poly(vinyl acetate) latexes prepared with polyvinyl alcohol are still one of the mainstays of the adhesives industry. With the passing of time, however, vinyl acetate copolymers have been developed: copolymers with maleate esters such as dibutyl maleate, acrylate esters such as ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate, versatic acid esters, and, more recently, ethylene. These versatile copolymers have found increasing use in more sophisticated adhesives with specialized properties, adhesives for clay coatings on paper, carpet backing, and interior and exterior paints. Thus more than 45 years after the first commercial production of vinyl acetate latexes, their use is still growing, both in actual quantities and different applications. The industrial importance of vinyl acetate latexes makes the mechanism and kinetics of their emulsion polymerization of practical as well as scientific interest.

There is a large body of Soviet work on emulsion polymerization, spanning a period of over three decades, that has been published primarily in the Russian language. Most of this has remained untranslated into English and hence un available to most other scientists. The value of this book lies primarily in the fact that it brings together the most important of these Soviet contributions, along with comment and analysis by the authors, who may be considered among the foremost authorities in this field in the Soviet Union. But the hundreds of literature citations go far beyond the borders of the Soviet Union and serve as an excellent bibliography of the world literature on emulsion polymerization up to the time this book was written. The book covers both fundamental and applied aspects. In the former are included discussions of particle formation mechanisms, a comprehensive theory of emulsion polymerization, copolymerization of polar monomers, and particle morphology and its implications with regard to derived film properties. Among the applied aspects are discussions of continuous emulsion polymerization, both tubular reactors and continuous stirred tank cascades, and various aspects con cerning the manufacture of some of the most important monomers, such as styrene, butadiene, vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, and chloroprene. This book will be an indispensable reference source for scientists who are entering the field as well as those who are experienced and who have wanted a ready access to this large body of literature.

This book documents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Adhesion Measurement of Films and Coatings, held in Newark, NJ, October 25-27, 1999. Since the First Symposium (Boston 1992) there had been considerable activity in devising new, more reliable and more efficient ways to measure adhesion of films and coatings, which resulted in the decision to organize the Newark Symposium.Films and coatings are used for a variety of purposes – functional, decorative, protective, etc. – in a host of applications. Irrespective of the purpose or application of a film or a coating, their adequate adhesion to the underlying substrates is of paramount importance. Concomitantly, the need to develop techniques for quantitative assessment of adhesion of films and coatings is all too obvious. This volume contains a total of 20 papers, which have all been rigorously peer reviewed and suitably modified before inclusion. The topics include: measurement and analysis of interface adhesion; relative adhesion measurement for thin film structures; adhesion testing of hard coatings by a variety of techniques; challenges and new directions in scratch adhesion testing of coated substrates; application of scratch test to different films and coatings; evaluation of coating-substrate adhesion by indentation experiments; measurement of interfacial fracture energy in multifilm applications; laser induced decohesion spectroscopy (LIDS) for measuring adhesion; pulsed laser technique for assessment of adhesion; blade adhesion test; JKR adhesion test; coefficient of thermal expansion measurement; and residual stresses in diamond films. This volume, providing the latest information, will be of great value and interest to anyone working in the area of adhesion measurement of films and coatings.

Both synthetic and natural latices were covered in this conference, including natural rubber latex, high volume synthetic emulsions, such as SBR, as well as specialty products, such as acrylics. Application markets addressed included adhesives and sealants, carpet backing, paper coatings, construction, fabrics, foamed articles, medical gloves, medical devices, textile threads, condoms and others. The latex industry is in dynamic flux at the present time. The supply side has undergone major restructuring. Inter-materials competition has intensified as improved materials become capable of challenging incumbent materials. Many serious issues face the latex industry, such as continuing price depression in some sectors, rising technical demands as well as substantial legislative and environmental pressure. Despite the challenging times facing the industry, the overall prospects for latex are very positive. Substitution of solvent based products continues, the performances of latices continues to improve in such applications as adhesives and the glove industry is responding positively to the setbacks of the allergy controversy. 9 million dry tons and has spread across a wide range of industrial and consumer markets. Growing demand in medical and strong prospects in construction are just two of the positive trends that will continue to fuel the market growth of both natural and synthetic latices. As last year's conference demonstrated, the Rapra International Latex Conference is an unparalleled forum for developing understanding of the latex industry, technical trends and market driving forces, such as new legislation. The 2002 event provided a vital meeting point for the synthetic and natural latex communities of Europe, Asia and America. This conference will be of interest to all latex stakeholders, including: feedstock suppliers, latex producers, compounders, fabricators of consumer, medical and industrial articles based on latex, traders and distributors, machine and equipment suppliers, legislators, healthcare professionals and users of latex based products.

Chemistry and Technology of Emulsion Polymerisation 2e provides a practical and intuitive explanation of emulsion polymerization, in combination with both conventional and controlled radical polymerization. For those working in industry, coupling theory with everyday practice can be difficult. By carefully explaining the principles of the reaction, based on well-designed experimental investigation, the book explains how the principles relate to practical application. The second edition of this book includes a new chapter on morphology of latex particles, a rapidly progressing area where modelling the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of phase separation and morphology has developed into a mature and powerful tool to predict and control morphology of latex particles. Another area that is rapidly progressing is the application of controlled radical polymerisation in emulsion polymerization. Controlled radical polymerisation is used in aiding encapsulation of inorganic particles like pigment particles and clay platelets. These latest developments are included in the second edition.
