Pretend You Don''''t See The Elephant is a personal memoir about the author''''s life growing up in the 1950s. Throughout the narrative, the elephant represents the silence surrounding familial dysfunctional behavior. Christian Science provided the background of denial in a home where physical, emotional, and verbal abuse ran rampant. The severity of the abuse and the denial of it destroyed the author''''s desire to live and at the age of twelve, she tried to commit suicide. Failing to die, she was exiled to an alcoholic uncle''''s home, barely escaping sexual molestation before being returned home to her parents. The Christian Science religion of her mother was responsible for the refusal of medical attention, leaving her to die after a ruptured appendix. The author was told every day of her life that she was a failure as a Christian Scientist and her illnesses were her fault. From her father she was told she was so clumsy and ugly that no one would ever marry her. Don''''t talk, don''''t tell was a way of life, and she spent a lifetime living under this code of silence. The effects of Christian Science denial, coupled with the physical and emotion abuse would ride on her shirt tail for the rest of her life. This then is the story of a victim who became victorious. The memoir continues on as she faces a tragic automobile accident. Accepting medical assistance removed her from the Christian Science Church at a time when she needed her faith the most. The success of her story is celebrated when she comes to terms with ''''who God is'''' in her life. It is with peace of mind that she now shares her story, lifting the veil of silence from the little girl, to tell the story that she was told never to tell.

The big story falls apart

The big story is the story that sits behind all our other stories. It is the story that provides the stable context for our lives. The author describes, in first-person perspective, what it means when the big story falls apart. He grew up in the 1960s, so there were plenty of socially based reasons for feeling that all the certainties were crumbling. And there were personal reasons too. An inability to even choose a career. Part 1 is The Disintegration. It finds the author leaving the city. Fleeing. But he finds a place to settle, in a valley that has walls of refuge., a place of retreat. It is good enough. He is telling this story as it happened, that memory returns to him after so long. He gives up books, he takes up gardening. He never stops thinking about the big story. But he ventures back in to a town, to a job, a tumultuous job that required him to learn the art of war. Books come back in, and music. Eventually there is a return to the city, wondering if it will be different. Part 2 is The Renewing. He says he is on a campaign to find the roots of the world tree. Writing about human resources and training in the day time, finding peace and joy in music. But he knows what he is finding in the stories, when his experiences turn into story. It is love, and morals. And some of the stories are in song. Part 3 is Onward. The author has to come back to the present, but he is called away by Mu, the chanter who has been here before. Mu's desire is to dance at the music festival, and we think he intends to stay, but he comes and is gone, with just a nod to the tawny frogmouth sitting in the tree. Part 4 is Reframing. The author is older. He is making principles. Now he knows that heaven and earth are working together. At the end, the story goes on. The energy flows in all directions.

In the tradition of Sarah Dessen, this powerful debut novel is a compelling portrait of a young girl coping with her mother’s cancer as she figures out how to learn from—and fix—her past mistakes. Few things come as naturally to Harper as epic mistakes. In the past year she was kicked off the swim team, earned a reputation as Carson High’s easiest hook-up, and officially became the black sheep of her family. But her worst mistake was destroying her relationship with her best friend, Declan. Now, after two semesters of silence, Declan is home from boarding school for the summer. Everything about him is different—he’s taller, stronger…more handsome. Harper has changed, too, especially in the wake of her mom’s cancer diagnosis. While Declan wants nothing to do with Harper, he’s still Declan, her Declan, and the only person she wants to talk to about what’s really going on. But he’s also the one person she’s lost the right to seek comfort from. As their mutual friends and shared histories draw them together again, Harper and Declan must decide which parts of their past are still salvageable and which parts they’ll have to let go of once and for all. In this honest and affecting tale of friendship and first love, Emily Martin brings to vivid life the trials and struggles of high school and the ability to learn from past mistakes over the course of one steamy North Carolina summer.

Before Thomas Edison, light and fire were thought to be one and the same. Turns out, they were separate things altogether. This book takes a similar relationship, that of time and place, and shows how they, too, were once inseparable. Time keeping was once a local affair, when small towns set their own pace according to the rising and setting of the sun. Then, in 1883, the expanding railroads necessitated the creation of Standard Time zones, and communities became linked by a universal time. Here Howard Mansfield explores how our sudden interconnectedness, both physically, as through the railroad, and through inventions like the telegraph, changed our concept of time and place forever.

In His Image is the next step for those who have read The Purpose Driven Life. Following the Life Purpose of Mission, this book explores God's great love for humanity from every book of the Bible. From the creation of Genesis to the culmination in Revelation, God’s love shines through every page. Never is this ever clearer than in the times of Israel’s great betrayal of their God. His passionate pursuit of His children can be heard dripping from his voice as He calls them (and us by proxy) back to His shelter and protection. This book was written ... • To convince the reader of God’s intense and immense love for them; • To encourage the reader to reach out to the God who is passionately in love with them; • To strengthen the reader’s faith in God’s compassion; and • To motivate the reader to share the love of God with every person they meet. It is very clear God loves people of all races and ethnicities. Therefore, whenever appropriate to the passage of the day, emphasis is made on the issue of racial reconciliation around God’s love. His love becomes the motivation for evangelism and for community. In each daily devotional ... • There is a Biblical Scripture they are encouraged to read; • There is a passage of Scripture to read in the devotional itself; • There is the devotional to read which focuses the reader on a single thought, broken into two, three or four practical ideas they can utilize that day in their lives; and • There is a thought to take with the reader each day which summarizes the theme concerning God’s great love for them.
